You're talking about the new one posted elsewhere on the site?

If so, and you can find a better deal than Chicago Harley's 20% off, I'm in.

I wonder if the Softtail optional 2-in-1 guage would work on a Sporty?
Top half is speedometer, bettom half is tachometer.

 not for sportster!! :censor I'm sure we can make it fit!!! :shhhhJ1850 is a communication protocol for the data bus. I bet Sporties don't have the info on the bus for all those functions. Although you could get a small microprocessor developement kit and program it to emulate the missing messages on the Sporty bus, that would be a lot of work. And could take you a few months working full time if you had the right experience just to get started.

That is nice though... I want one for my bike!!!

I installed a factory tach on a XL1200C last week. Here are the HD part numbers. The tach works great, backlight and all.

Tach #69427-04 $213.95
Bracket #69426-04 $49.95
Housing #67524-04 $19.95

Did you have to splice into the wiring harness, or did you just plug-in at a connector or something?

There are 2 wires that are spliced. 1 wire spliced into the Taillight wire under the seat and 1 wire spliced into the Data Link Connector that is located behind the Battery Cover. Also is a Digital to Analog converter that is fastened under the Backbone beneath the Gas Tank, 1 connector that plugs into a connector under the seat, 1 ground wire that is connected to the grounding lug on the transmission and 3 wires that are connected to the Tach. All wiring is in a wiring harness that is supplied with the Tach assy kit.
Here are the part numbers that are for 2004 and 2005 XL1200C and MSRP.

Tach assy kit: 69427-04 $213.95
Bracket: 69426-04 $49.95
Housing: 67525-04 $19.95

It took me about 2 hours to intall on the first bike. I will be installing another one this weekend. I don't have a camera so I won't have pictures during the installation. Should take me about an hour to install the 2nd one.

Here are photos from www.harley-davidson.com for the above items.

To daesdaemar

Because you have the color combo that I truly lust, and because that is the color combo I am currently trying to buy...

This is a "Limited Edition" color scheme, right? One of the numbered ones? Your bike, I mean... Thanks!

And, BTW - you DO have the COOLEST color Sporty!! :)

I'm having a little trouble following you on this. According to the manual there is a Ground, Accessory, Instrument, and Serial Bus. That would technically make 4 but I could see where they could consolidate Accessory and Instrument Pwr.

So they don't just give you a Y-harness to tie into the speedo? You physically have to splice wires in? Seems like it could have been designed a little better.

Guys. Here is what I have done so far.

I have a circuit board ready to build that has
Freescale 68HC912B32 processor
16 superbright led RPM display
2.2in LCD display 128x64
Temperature sensor
light sensor
EEPROM
RS232 port
A/D ports available todo O2 sensor or other additional sensors.

I have a case drawn in emachineshop.com software, that I need to get machined. Emachineshop is an outfit run from india and they can't do it right. I have considered a rapid prototype to get started.

I am ready to pull the trigger on building it but its going to cost $1000 for me to build the first one and about $150 for each additional.

I currently am running a 68HC912B32 Eval board with a character LCD connected upto my bike and reports, MPH, RPM, and Odometer. It has a cardboard box for a case and I plug it into the debug port for now.

I have a couple option going forward.

1. do like everyone else and make it and sell it for $400. as-is
2. I have been thinking of selling it with software; but also releasing the source code and other details so that there is a potential for you to modify it as your skills allow. it may still cost $400 though.

Its going to look something like these and fit into the stock location:
What do you guys think?

$400 isnt to far off. I have seen other units, not for sportsters, that run about that or more. Instead of reinventing the wheel how hard would it be to make the LCD display show RPMs? It would be like adding another mode. You could also use the Key led for the security system as a shift light. It would be super clean and stealth. just a though.

Reprogramming the existing unit would be more difficult. I have no idea what processor they are using, I have no schematics, and would be even harder to be able to provide a solution to others.

My system will have multiple screen modes optimized viewing for MPH or RPM. Plus, a clock temperature sensor(air), and provide statistics like 0-60, and 1/4mile times.

Looks cool. In the image it looks like the leds around the perimeter would show tach and lcd would show rpm. Your statement above makes it sould like mph and rpm can not be displayed at the same time. Is this correct?

If I had the funds I wouldnt mind it, cause the tack feature is worth the xtra $ to me. i like the clean look cause I think the tach on the top of the guage takes away from the "custom" look.

Neato, keeno, coolsville daddio....dig it.

Thanks. So the LCD will have a large number display that can switch between MPH and RPM. The LED's will always show RPM.

I may in smaller font on the MPH screen also show RPM. I will just have to see how readable it is. The issue with the LED's is there are only 15 for the RPM display. It makes it hard to tell the difference between 2200 and 2500.

Keep checking the website cause I will be posting updates to the development blog.
