Stepped up this year from street to supergas 10.2 class with bars . And the first race is now history...
Those bars were tough to manage....
whoooaaaaa pogo sticked down the track for two test runs...
That wasnt good at all ,very frustrating as it made me question what the hell was I doing in this new class.
Did some adjusting to the bars with the help of some buell guys at the track.
1st 2 runs were in the high 11's....ugly. (rmrber the thoughts I had..."what the hell am I doing 1.5 seconds off the mark!")
First run in qualifying with the bars adjusted to about 1.75 inches went so much smoother and we shaved it down to a 10.9. I had told myself after the first two crappy runs that my goal was to be in the 10's, and so It happened.
Next qualifier saw me do a 10.75, so now I am feeling like I can make a go of this 10.2 class with a lot more practice.
Eliminations sunday and my first run was handed to me with my opponents redlight. Decent run for me with a 1.714 60 foot and a 10.53 at 131 mph. Happy as hell for the win and because I had set a more confident goal of hitting a 10.5. (figured if I can do a 10.5 on the first race with no slick yet ,then I will be able to get down to 10.2 soon enough with the slick)
Next round saw me up against last years champ.....
I was pumped full of enthusiasm from last rounds results and I was determined to give this guy a run.
It felt great...a .138 reaction (my best of the day) and a 1.696 60 foot( better than expected on my street tire) and a proud 10.44 at 133.9 mph. I gave it my best and even better , the reaction and 60 foot were both the days best for me and the shifts were good and now I was floored by my 10.44 run!
I gave him a run, but he is a machine. His .038 reaction and 1.4 60 foot sewed up the win for him, (and he went on to win the class)but I have never felt so great in defeat...A TEN POINT FOUR was so great coming so quickly after my shitty start the day before. I will be knocking on the door as soon as next race.
An emotional roller coaster going from frustrated and depressed to elated.
3 weeks till we are up again.
End of the story. Thanks for listening.....

Good Job, sounds like the other guy is on the box. Once they get dialed in they are hard to beat.

Hi.

Very inpressive sir.
I remember back in Highschool, all the guy's in autoshop would brag how they could run 11's in the quarter, I knew they were full of it, My car was dailed at 12.98, and that was pretty consistant.
I have ridden in cars that could do 11, and to do this on a bike, well, that is even more so.
10.44 in the quarter is very hard to do, no matter what your in.

Narley, You should feel REAL good about your weekend...getting dialed in is tough, but every tweak you were making was giving you progress, so it was all good! I imagine the guy that beat you realizes he's gonna have some competition this year! Have a great racing season and keep us updated! I got pumped up just reading about your weekend...Sportsters DO rule! :clap

Sounds like ya had ya bars set a bit too high...rough guide is to just fit ya boot under the wheels...but I gather you've worked that out by now....

Crackin a 1.6 60' is cool.....havn't been that quick outa the gate yet...best around 1.75's with street tires and NO trainer wheels ;) :D:D:D:D

It's a whole new ball game when ya start gettin into 10's isn't it!!!!

I'm hopin for consistent 10's in daily ride trim on mine when it goes back together...not easy to achive but I think I can get there... I'm doin low 10's on the Gixxer and I can't hold full power in second...I have to hold some rear brake on thru 2nd as the front just comes up and keeps comin...FUN :D:D:D:D:D

1st 2 runs were in the high 11's....ugly.

I'd be in heaven if I could run high 11's on mine.. Admittedly i'm not a drag racer. But i'd still be gigglin

I'm thinking you could get better 60 ft times. When I was using wheelie bars in SS/XL class with AMRA Harley Drags I did 1.5 60 ft times with an Avon AM23 (best 60 ft times was on a damn near wore out tire)
street tire @ 4 lbs pressure. The way I launched was 5800 or so and dump the clutch. That was enough revs to break the tire loose just a bit. Good launches carried the front tire till I punched the button for 2nd. Bad launches hooked too good and bogged (rare) or smoked the tire a bit. Most of the other guys on street tires tended to launch slipping the clutch, damn hard on clutches. A good rule of thumb on bar height is the width of a 2x4 tight fit, like your 1 3/4" setting. Too much lower and it interferes with turning off the track at the end.
A tenth gained on your 60 ft times is good for 2 tenths on the big end. :clap :tour :tour :D
Get your launch down and the rest just happens. Have fun.
