Guys,
I am looking for some engine break-in procedures for my HQ upgraded bike. What did you do and how did it work? How often should I change the oil? I did the mild conversion by Head Quarters and had a bad ignition, so that has been sent out. I haven't recieved the new one yet but when I do.... hopefully I will get to go for a quick spin b4 my ass freezes!
Peace :p

G'day

Here's a reply I did on the old forum
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

G'day With all my motors I set the initial timing and jetting/idle then take them for a ride.
When they are up to full operating temp I then crack it from about 80 kays in top to about 110 then back of the throttle hard and let it come back down to 80.
I slowly build it back up over the next 100 meters or so then ride for about a kay at about 90.
then I roll off the throttle back to 80 and hit it hard till it gets to about 110 again then back it off hard.
This is repeated about 6 - 8 times then I take it back to the workshop and set the idle up again.

The customer is also asked to do a similar thing on a regular basis in the first few hundred kays and let the motor rev free :ie not lugging down low
(as it's only their bike but the motor is now one of my babies they just have custodianship )
I tell the customer to bring it back after the fist 100 or so kays and do an oil and filter change, recheck idle and everything else.
Then get 'em to bring it back after about a 1000 kays and do another oil and filter change and check idle and maybe take a bit of fuel out and put a bit if timing in it (as i set them up safe from a rebuild).
The majority of your running in is done by now but if you were going to syn I would leave it another 4000 kays before changing.

After that ride it like ya stole it but only rev it hard when it is up to operating temp and this doesn't mean leave it idle for half an hour then jump on it and flog it.

here is an excellent link to breakin a motor in. I followed this procedure and never had an issue. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Should one expect any smoke during break in or is this going to be a smoke free ride from the get go.

Stevo is right on it (as usual),

I always baby the engine (but do not let it lug along, keeping it spinning freely) for the first 50 miles, gradually increasing revs for short periods and backing off in between. I also keep the same notional rev limit for around 50-100 miles in beteween rev increases. Change the oil soon (50 -100 miles) then at regular service intervals.

Never had a smoky or sized engine.... ;)

Fellas,
thanks for all the input. I can't wait for spring time so I can fire the bitch up for the first time as a 1200! Peace
