View Full Version : anyone have a daytona carbon fiber D.O.T. willy 25th May 2005, 21:24 Anyone have any info on the Daytona dot carbon fiber half helmets? looking to buy a nice lite small carbon fiber, must be DOT any info on these helmets would be great. thanks Choppdchic 25th May 2005, 21:30 Hi.......www.carbonfiberhelmets.com...........they just became DOT not too long ago. Expensive, but very nice and very small. Smaller than anything else I have ever seen. I have one and love it! Hope that helps. :clap boomer 25th May 2005, 21:36 I will have some in about 2 weeks I am waiting on my supplier to get some more in. willy 25th May 2005, 21:37 Checked out the site nice looking helmets. thanks for your info, might have to purchase one of those. are the straps pretty comfortable, boomer 25th May 2005, 21:44 Yes that is one of the compliments I have gotten, they are nylon like the others but they do not have those ridges in them that some people have complained about rubbing their neck. You can also customize the quick connect with optional designs. I do not have a good picture to show you unforunately. mikeLI_77 25th May 2005, 22:21 a guy i work with has one of these carbon fiber helmets and i don't like it because other than the outer shell there is just about no padding on the inside. if you fall it may stop you from getting cut up but it's not going to absorb any of the impact. at least the one he has won't i don't know if different ones are made any differently boomer 25th May 2005, 22:44 Can you find out what brand it was? Was it DOT Approved? I bet it was either a novelty helmet or a novelty helmet with a DOT sticker on it. By law it has to have the following info on it to be a real DOT helmet. Helmets that meet FMVSS 218 must have a sticker on the outside back of the helmet with the letters DOT, placed there certifying that the helmet meets or exceeds FMVSS 218. It is important to note that some sellers of novelty helmets provide DOT stickers separately for motorcyclists to place on non-complying helmets. In this case, the DOT sticker is invalid and does not certify compliance. The symbol "DOT" constitutes the manufacturer’s certification that the helmet conforms to the applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. This symbol shall appear on the outer surface, in a color that contrasts with the background, in letters at least 3/8 inch high, centered laterally approximately 1 1/4 inches from the bottom edge of the posterior portion of the helmet. An Interpretation Letter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states the requirement that helmets be permanently labeled prohibits the use of labels that can be removed by hand, without tools or chemicals. Therefore, a sticker that falls off the helmet would not appear to be in compliance within the meaning of Standard No. 218. Manufacturer’s Labeling Manufacturers are required by FMVSS 218 to place a label on or inside the helmet stating the manufacturer’s name, model, size, month and year of manufacture, construction materials, and owner information. A cheap helmet that does not meet the federal safety standard usually does not have such a label. Thick Inner Liner Helmets meeting the minimum federal safety standard have an inner liner--usually about one inch thick--of firm polystyrene foam. Sometimes the inner liner will not be visible, but you should still be able to feel its thickness. Unsafe helmets normally contain only soft foam padding or a bare plastic shell with no foam at all. Sturdy Chin Strap and Rivets Helmets meeting the DOT safety standard have sturdy chin straps with solid rivets mikeLI_77 25th May 2005, 23:00 i'll try to find out for you. the guy is out of work on injury now so it may take me a few days to get to talk to him and find out. Gone 25th May 2005, 23:55 i'll try to find out for you. the guy is out of work on injury now so it may take me a few days to get to talk to him and find out. Head injury ?? mikeLI_77 26th May 2005, 00:07 Head injury ?? no not a motorcycle related injury this time. he got rear ended while driving his car his car. mikeLI_77 26th May 2005, 21:33 ok well i found out his new helmet is not DOT approved. I guess that's why it is so thin and basically has no padding at all. he got his from the same place that is linked above i was told. boomer 27th May 2005, 18:24 That is something I have never understood, if you are going to wear a helmet why wear a novelty one? I can understand in the old days when the DOT helmets were a lot heavier and bulky but now with all the newer materials the DOT are so much lighter. I guess I should not complain if my customers want to buy a novelty over a DOT I am more than happy to sell them one!:D Choppdchic 27th May 2005, 18:38 Mikeli 77..................The link above that I posted does have non-DOT helmets, but they also have the smallest DOT approved helmets. The DOT ones have a little more padding in them, but the shell is considerably stronger than most, if not all others. And no, I don't have stock in the company! :D I just love the one I have and people ask me all the time where I got it. :clap Nicco 27th May 2005, 18:43 I have actually done quite a bit of research on this topic. I narrowed my choices between a DOT carbon fiber helmet from carbonfiberhelmets.com, and one from Nexl Sports. After extensive research, calling the shops and interviewing the owners, I decided to go with the Nexl DOT carbon fiber half helmet. The ACC DOT helmet crom carbonfiberhelmets.com claims to be the smallest/lightest DOT approved half helmet, but the truth is they have not been audited by DOT yet. DOT works on an "honor system" They test a certain number of these helmets each year to verify compliance, but anyone can stick a DOT sticker on a helment and claim that it's DOT certified....until they test it and if fails. Carbonfiberhelmets.com told me they have done independet testing in their own facility in Tennesee, but there is not a DOT approved testing gacility in Tennesee. The Nexl carbon fiber helmet has been audited by DOT, and passed. You can view the reports on the Internet. For now, Nexl has the the smallest/lightest carbon fiber half helmet on the market that is truely DOT certified. Nexl also issues a warranty card with their helmets that gaurantees DOT compliance. The ACC DOT helmet from carbonfiberhelmets.com does not put it in writing. Just some food for though... Choppdchic 27th May 2005, 19:38 Nicco......... Thanks for the info, that is good to know. When I bought mine I got to look at a Nexl and ACC side by side from friends that had them. I personally liked the ACC a lot better but just IMHO. My state does not require helmets so certified DOT is not a big deal here as far as the law. Lots of riders wear the Davida ?? from Europe that are not DOT over here either, but perfectly safe. If I crash, ANY little half helmet probably isn't going to do me much good anyway, but it keeps my head warm! :D :p mikeLI_77 28th May 2005, 19:29 Mikeli 77..................The link above that I posted does have non-DOT helmets, but they also have the smallest DOT approved helmets. I didn't even realize until i was told what website he bought it from that it was the same one you posted. I tried to tell my friend the day i saw him that the non DOT approved helmet he has is not the greatest because it does not have any padding on it but he listened to this other biker guy i work with which made him believe the one he bought was the best one ever. I would buy one of these but i would only buy the DOT approved ones. |
