Greetings all,
I had an end cap fall off of my HD Handle grips, they were the kick ass chrome ones with the rubber flames down them, too....so I bought a set to replace them. I bought the HD 56285-98 handle grips which are supposed to fit all 1982 and later models without handlebar air valve. It seems like the molding where the throttle cables clip into the handle grip is too thick, and when the whole thing is re-assembled, the throttle hangs up and doesn't return to closed freely. Can't ride yet, so I'm not too too worried, but has anyone else had this problem? Am I doing something wrong? Do I just need to take the grips back and start from scratch?
I can't remember if my signature has it or not, but my bike is an 04 XL1200 C.
Thanks all!

Did you shave down the cable attach point on the grip or hog out the switch housing where it's rubbing?

One of the more common problems is the throttle lock.. The grips that were on there may have been somewhat shaved to fit. Have you tried loosening the throttle lock ?? (seen this before)
you can always sand down the plastic on the grip if they are hanging up in the housing. Check it off the bike to be sure..

This might sound like a stupid question but I gotta ask. Does your bike have a throttle friction screw that might be too tight? I couldn't think of a good reason to ever remove the end caps on my flames grips ... so I just super-glued them on and haven't lost one since. Been about a year now.

No, it's not the thorottle tension screw....where it seems to be hanging up is right where the arbors are for the thorottle grommets.
I initally thought the thorottle tension screw too, but that'd be too easy. Baphomet, I can't figure out why a person would want to remove those endcaps either, and I think I lost mine going down the road, there one minute, gone the next...if I could just get a new end cap, that'd end alot of my problems...I like the flame grips, I really do.

I don't know if this will be of any help but when i replaced the throttle on my '09 1200N with an aftermarket one, I had a problem with the throttle being "sticky"...sometimes it would return slowly and sometimes it didn't return at all. I thought that I had adjusted it according to the shop manual but it turned out to be a little too tight. When I allowed a 1/8th of an inch or so more freeplay in the pull cable the problem went away and has never come back.
