Go check the 'Gun Talk' section, where this thread should eventually get moved.

Wrong forum.

Some of the rules of a CCW is carry in stealth.
Out of sight. Not telling everyone you have a CCW.
In some states, that's a fast way to lose the CCW.

I carry a Springfield GI 1911, I converted it to a flat main spring housing, commander style hammer and an appropriate grip safety to accept the new hammer. I however live in Vt, so concealed carry and open carry are both un licensed, so my gun is seen when the wind blows my shirt up a bit I am not too worried.

I really like my Taurus PT140 .40 S&W. However, I recommend going to a gunshop and seeing what CCW type handgun will fit in your hand. I was sold on getting a Glock until I actually put it in my hand and realized it just didn't feel right to me. The Taurus fit really well in my hand, was nearly half the price of the Glock, has a lifetime warranty, and typically gets positive reviews.

I chose a .40S&W over a 9mm or .45 because it was designed for law enforcement. It has characteristics of a 9mm (range, velocity, shooting ease), but also has stopping power more closely resembling a .45. Some people will argue this because you can slant numbers depending on what loads you use with each.

Wyoming is legal open carry also. I just got tired of the :censor holster banging into and hanging up on stuff. I guess for me the CCW is just a means of being more comfortable.

the one you shoot the best and will carry every day it does you know good to get a gun that is not comfortable becuse you wont cary it. You have to find out what that is for you for me it is a glock but as someone said the glock dosnt fit them so go to a shop that you can rent guns from and fine the one that works for you

Had a Glock 27 sub compact. Nice pistol, but it was like carrying a brick in your pants. Not very concealable IMO, and it was so noticeable people would comment on it. I now carry my wifes Taurus .38 snub nose, 815 I think, it's a seven shot not the standard 5, loaded with Hydra shocks(??). It is more comfortable beleive it or not then the Glock was. My uncle who is really into the whole carrying thing, carries/carrys a kahr 9mm, awesome gun, seriously. Slim as hell, barely know its there and shoots close range really tight.

Here is what I suggest.

1) Go to and indoor range that rents pistols and find one you like, it don't matter what I like and like to carry, YOU have to be comfortable with it.
2) Don't let price be the deciding factor in what you buy, you will only end up selling the one you settled for and then buy the one you really wanted.
3) Back to the indoor range, take a training class or two for concealed carry. Knowing how to shoot is just as important and learning when were and why too.
4) Be committed to once a month to shoot a box or two too keep sharp. Defensive shooting is not like target shooting, and it is not like falling off a bicycle, it is a skill that need to be kept sharp.

Lastly, talk to the NRA rep in your area and get the names of three of four good defense lawyers in your area, take the time to meet with them and pick one to carry his or her card with you at all times, if the worst case happens, you will need a good lawyer.

Nobody mentioned the "pocket guns" I got a fullsize and just knew right away that I wasn't going to deal with a 2lb hunk of metal to try to carry around and hide, I got a Keltec 380 and I hardly know its there, some argue a 380 isn't big enough for "social work" but my opinion is that the gun you have is better than the gun at home. I wouldn't want a 380 pointed at me and with a good defensive round I think it will take care of buisness if needed. The only thing I think is bad is its not very threatening looking to a threatening person. Wich means just the site of it may not deter someone threatening you. There was a local incident with a pocket pistol where the gun was pulled and the guy kept coming, a warning shot was fired and the guy kept advancing, had it been a serious looking gun the guy may have stopped....... but maybe not. And by the way it was a 32 caliber and it stopped the guy.

I have to say this first in these threads.
I f you can't kill someone DO NOT carry, they will take it from you and kill you instead.

With that said go to the rental ranges and try some out.

And save some money to buy a better brand.

Thanks for the advice. I found out the answer to that question when I was a teenager. The reason I finally got the CCW doesn't have anything to do with human beings.

Of course the 1911 is an outdated design. It came from an era when weapons were designed to win fights, not to avoid product liability lawsuits. It came from an era where it was the norm to learn how your weapon operated and to practice that operation until it became second nature, not to design the piece to the lowest common denominator. It came from an era in which our country tried to supply its fighting men with the best tools possible, unlike today, when our fighting men and women are issued hardware that was adopted because of international deal-making or the fact that the factory is in some well-connected congressman's district. Yes, beyond any shadow of a doubt, the 1911 IS an outdated design....and that's exactly what I love about it. :smoke
