I'm changing my oil and just realized I have 3 qts of HD's SAE50 and 1 .5 qts of HD's 20/50. Can I mix the two with no ill effects?

i wouldnt do that ..20/50 is normal but adding straight 50w is too thick imo
and probably most would agree :smoke

Nope, as Angus has stated, 50w is way too thick.

cool, thanks for the quick replies. I'll see if I can exchange them for 20w50.

I'd say it depends on the weather, that is, what your ambient temperatures are. My 2008 Sporty shop manual says SAE 50 weight motor oil is best for use above 60 degrees F. Otherwise its just viscosity you probably don't need; starting may be tough.

I agree with Guido.

best advice: RTFM

or GAFM(get an F'ing manual) than RTFM

Yea, my Clymer manual wasn't helpful. This forum usually is though. Usually.

get yourself a service manual and a parts catalouge from the dealer the parts book is good because the pics show every piece and the service manual is probably 5 times more detailed than a clymer

parts catalouge: p/n 99451-09a (for a 2009)
service manual: 99484-09

Page 84 of the 2008 Owners Manuel says 50W over 60 degree temps is fine, with 60W over 80 degrees. I mix them all the time, these are tractor Engines. Ride Safe!!

I mix them all the time. During the summer.

I just ended up exchanging them for 20/50. I didn't realize there was a big difference between the Clymer manual and the HD one...makes sense though, guess I'll pick one up. Thanks for the replies.
