He was truly one of the greatest football players, both on and off the field.

Merlin was a class act if there ever was one. He was one of the best defensive linemen ever, and along with Rosie Grier, Deacon Jones and Lamar Lundy, were some of the baddest of bad. The Fearsome Foursome of the LA Rams. Even later on with Fred Dryer, Jack Youngblood and Larry Brooks were the New Fearsome Foursome, and were fantastic. Some of the best players in history. Merlin definitely deserved his Hall Of Fame status.

Off the field he was a gentlemen for sure. Such a kind soul for such a bruiser on the field. The game as well as the world needs more people like Merlin.

"Mesothelioma, more precisely malignant mesothelioma, is a rare form of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body's internal organs, the mesothelium. It is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.

Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the heart,[1] the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart) or tunica vaginalis."
