Looking to do the NRHS 88ci kit on my X1 with a set of XL1200 heads. Anyone have any input? Hopefully ordering the kit soon and will start to take the engine apart to get it machined by the end of the month.

THANKS

Here's the answer, you can't beat an 88" big bore kit for the money. They rev and they make power, anywhere from 110 to 130+ hp depending on heads, cams and exhaust. They're all bad to the bone.............Steve

Nice! How's that exhaust working for you? I'm using Force Exhaust and had to fabricate goofey tab around baffle to get back bottom end, cost me 2 HP on top but gave me almost 4o ft lbs off idle... doesn't sound just right either.

Used Super Trap on my 2 stroke race skis...pain in the ass to keep disks clean though on 2 stroke...

Be good,

Billy

I wish I had made the head pipes 1 7/8" instead of 2". It gained 2 hp @7100 but lost almost 5 ft lbs @ 4500- 5500 rpm, Ain't that the way it goes? Still I like the way it looks and the sound rocks. Next exhaust will be a shorter 2-1 with open reverse cone megaphone, sorta like the one on the "hammer" in this pic.............................Steve

if i went with the 88' kit on my Nighster would the rest of the engine and transmission survive the 100 HP plus beating?
do i need to have the stage 1 work done to the heads as well to get to 100 HP?

The engine cases and tranny will be fine if assembled correctly. you may need a better clutch though. Now you will definately need some kind of port/ head work. You gotta feed the cylinders, small valves will fill good at low rpm , but will run out of air on a bigger motor at high rpm levels. Cams, head work and exhaust are critical to an engine build like this. It can make the difference between a 85hp so & so or a 130hp monster.Talk to Dan @ NRHS ............Steve

You will need a whole lot more than just stage 1 headwork to use with an 88" build. Stage 2 is a minimum for a low hp 88" but generally you must get stage 3 headwork, bigger carb or throttle body, cams, ignition, etc.

Even a low budget 88" will usually start around $4,500 and the typical build is closer to $6,000 by the time it is done. The 88" engines are not for beginners.

If you cannot afford to do everythng right away on an 88" you should not build one as they will run worse than a 1250 kit. For most folks a well built 1250 kit is really the best package for street use.

thanks for the answers fellas.
i am already at 76/80 and will probably stay there.
having a 450 HP Mustang GT helps to control the urge for more power...:laugh
