So my drive belt broke with 7500 miles on the clock. Haven't booked the service yet. One dealer says it should be covered under warranty, one says it won't be. How does it work, exactly? Is it like health insurance where you might have to pay out of pocket but if you argue enough they'll reimburse you? It's also complicated by the fact that one service dept. is backed up for 2 weeks (the warranty one) and the other says I could have it back in about 2 days. Figures, huh. It always comes down to time or money. What would you do in my place?

(This is not only my 1st HD but my first non-used vehicle ... Warranty? What's a warranty? )

Hmmmm....tough one. I might be inclined to say that belts, like oil changes, brakes and the like, are part of regular routine maintenance and would be the owner's responsibility and not a warranty item.

I'm not sure how many miles a belt is supposed to go, but I'm sure it can vary and saying it should have gone 15,000 miles vs. 7,500 miles is like arguing that you should get 15,000 miles out of a back tire but then it needs to be replaced at 7,500 miles. That wouldn't be under warranty either, so I'm thinking you might lose with the belt argument.

I think I would just pay to get it fixed in 2 days and get back to riding. :)

Read your warrantee, it has to specify the items it
does not cover. Mine mentioned that it does not
cover chains but never mentioned belts.

Mine belt on my 2003 broke at 5k miles and my dealer replaced
it under warrantee.

A little complaining goes a long way.

Thanks, Kath and Decman. I kept on calling dealers and I got one who actually picked up the ball and ran with it! He called HD cust service and got it "pre-authorized" for me! Best news I heard all day :)
