HI,

I have a 98 Sportster, I have just rebuilt the bike and it looks great - but it does need a fat tyre on there.

Does anyone have any ideas or know of any kits that are not too much cash ?

http://www.ewins.enta.net

Thanks

Paul

Do it yourself. Checkout my thread on a DIY 180 kit. You can modify the stock swingarm.

Hey Paul, The bike looks sweet!!

I've got a couple wide tire kits on my website - here's a link

Frantic Custom Cycles - Sportster Wide Tire Kits (http://www.franticcustomcycles.com/page13.html)

They aren't cheap but they INCLUDE EVERYTHING and the wheel stays centered in the frame.

I have a link, I have been looking for a fat tire kit myself. I have not actually used this, but you might wanna check it out. The whole kit is just under a 1000.

does anybody know if the 240 kit swing arm bolts right up to the frame

The swingarm bolts right up. It's the fender and shocks that won't. The most difficult parts of the conversions are fitting the wider fender and moving the upper shock mounts out. The frame has to be cut and bent. In the case of the 240 kits, the struts get cut off and new ones need to be welded on.... unless you really wanna widen the frame out alot.

make your own man.... once i figure out how to post pictures... I bought another swingarm off of ebay, and widened it 4", kept the stock length as well.. the kits all add 2" in length...so you need a longer belt. bought a pulley from T&N racing, they make most of the 240 kits that everyone is selling....

Im just waiting for pulley and rotor spacers to continue with this build..... :tour

Hey Chuck,

Where is your thread "DIY 180 kit"? I'd like to see that.
Did you have to widen out the frame?

Thanks.

If you look at older cafe bikes from Britain in the 60's many have this notch/hole. It's for your package/ nuts/ knards... Riding a motorcycle even a bicycle leaning forward with pressure on the groin can cause problems with urination and even fertility over time (with males). Although this bike is not a cafe the rider is still reaching forward to those drag bars.

Hey Pattywagon, welcome to the forum. After you get 15 posts you'll be allowed to start uploading photos. I look forward to seeing what you've done.

mine sits fine with 12.5 inch shocks, my goal was to keep it as stock looking as possible so i cut and spread the rear frame. i will tell you this much, whether you spread the frame or cut the struts off the bottom line is there is a considerable amount of work that needs to be done to make it all work and look good. its not for the novice, and was is the kit they sell on ebay and in CAS4. i had a killer write up on clubchopper but all the links for the pics dont work anymore, someday ill put together another write up

in all i had 6 months into the deal working on it a few hours a night a few days a week taking my time, that was just to make it ridable. all the fine details and paint came 6 months later after the riding seaon was over and im still far from finished

Like onesickxl1200 said, it's a lot of work to do it right!!!:geek:geek:geek I did mine last winter and used about 3 months of nites getting it done:

http://xlforum.net/photopost/data/500/Middle.jpg

I used one from LedSled Customs and a 210mm Metzeler on a 5.5" Fatboy wheel. Take a look in my gallery and you will see about 8-10 shots of what I did. A lot of the effort was also due to me dropping the seat bar 4" to lower that. Had to custom-make a battery mount on the swingarm and install a custom oil tank. My swingarm was extended 4" so I can use the stock VROD belt....:wonderlan :wonderlan :wonderlan

my rear fender is a jesse james steeler 10.5 inch fender, it has the idenitcal profile of the stock fender so thats why i got it, it was 150 or so on ebay. the kit i have is the 240 one they sell on ebay and cas4. the dragon kits from what ive heard only have up to 180-200 tire sizes unless they do more since the last time i checked. ive also heard alot of bad things about dealing with him. the 240 kit has you cut the rear struts off and weld in new internal struts but i hated they way it looked in the add pictures so i cut out my cross brace, heated the frame, and spread it about 4-5 inches to clear the tire and fender. the 180 kits cut that rear brace and still have you spread the frame but obviously not as much as i did. my wheel is an 18x8.5. having a low profile 21 inch front wheel i didnt want a 16 incher rear plus i like the look of the bigger billet wheel. you can run any diameter wheel you want as long as the tires diameter stays the size you want, your just taking more sidewall out of the tire and adding it to the rim diameter.

just saw on ebay dragon does hve the 240/250 kits now to. i also just remembered i had delt with him before. it was on a set of chrome calipers i bought from him. after i opened the box i inspected them and when wiping off all the finger prints they had gotten on them before shipping the chrome was just litterely peeling off as i wiped. it took me over a year and the threat of legal action to get my refund

Cheers for that..yep it`s going to be the 200 kit.. so will the 10.5 inch fender be ok,?

Also when the cross brace is cut and the frame is spread,i take it the shocks. line the back up ok as they are bolted up.............

yup the shocks mounts are spread outwards and they line up with the mounts on the wider swing arm. a 10.5 may be a little to wide for a 200 tire. im not sure what width they use with a 200 but im sure someone will chine in.

A 10.5" fender is too wide for a 200. You need a 9" fender. A 10.5" is or a 230 or 240.
