I had the O2 sensors welded in to help in tuning the motor, they give me a constant read into what is happening in those cylinders. I spent alot of money to redo that engine and I dont want to find out too late if it's running rich or lean. K&N makes the sensors and the gauge.

Nice conversion, Rush! Me likey alot! :clap

Is it a straight bolt-on setup?
Yep. It was a straight bolt-on conversion & I LOVE the results! The rigid ride isn't much different than with the shocks.
I need to dump the pull back risers, though. I'm pretty tall, so I need all the room I can get.

A couple days ago I came out of the local Harley dealer and there was a few RUBs standing around my bike saying how they wouldn't ever ride something that "uncomfortable" and how the guy that owns it must be a hardcore.
I joined them standing around my bike and listened for a minute, then inserted my key. One dude stupidly asked me if it was my bike. :frownthre I said "no, it's a rental" then I smiled, stomped the kicker & rode away.

Love the reaction when they see it belongs to a girl! :eek

I gotsta get me one of those kits. What brand is it?

Rush
6th September 2007, 00:12
You know, I'm not sure. I bought it off ebay from a seller called americanclassicmotors, I think it's a Santee bolt on. I paid $150.00 or so.

I had to get a longer chain (120), as well. For some odd reason, my exhaust bracket wouldn't fit the pipes right anymore, my kicker hit BOTH of them. ugh. Simple enough fix, I just fabbed up some new individual brackets. Like any mod, it's those pesky little things that make you nuts. :doh

19803a, Yeah, those are the best kick around shoes for the garage. Wonder if they make them in a steel-toe... :p

I'll have to post some new pic's soon. Someone just bought me a set of leather saddlebags for it, so I'll have to relocate the tail light and plate and possibly change the pipes in order to use them. They are a pretty nice set and will look good once they are on. Now I will be able to travel a little further because I pack a few more things on it.

nice! dig the pipes. how does it sound with a 2 into 1 into 2? i imagine you get a lot more exhaust out of the starboard side of that thing.

Well, as the title says... I just picked up this '71...
It's got a few 'issues' but nothing too serious... I hope! Currently it's got a S&S super b and isn't running very well. Pretty much only likes to run on the front cylinder. It probably needs to be timed too. Some new tires, clean up the wiring, new bars(mini apes?), ect ect

What do you think?!?

Guess I can show a picture of mine aswell. It's a 72 which has been rebuilt some by the previous owner. Among the mods are horseshoe oiltank with battery inside it, square tubing swing, fatbob tank, discbrake frontend, widened and chopped rear fender. The engine is stock except for an S&S E but will get ported heads and other cams this winter. Will keep you updated on the progress when I start ripping her apart :D

http://hem.bredband.net/b271964/hojen.JPG

The tank in the background is from a 99 and will be stretched and modified before replacing the fatbob that is on now.

Here is mine. I got it last week. My first Iron Head ever. Woo Hooooo!

1981 XL1000. The Previous Owner had it painted recently, had lots of parts powder coated, he was changing all the little bolts over to allen head rounded top chromed bolts (really gives it a clean finished look). He swapped the bars over to these from the original ones that were on there and he swapped out the front wheel because the old one had some rust showing up on it. The Owner before him had a lot of things done to the bike including the snazzy S&S Super E carb and the pipes that are now wrapped.

By all means keep the drag bars. They make the bike. It's an amazing transformation. Your bike goes from ho-hum to mean and nasty (and cool) in one simple mod. They bring out the bike's best features.

1957 XLH, #10 off the production line and ABSOLUTLEY BONE ORIGINAL. Less than 2000 miles. Original tires, everything. The owner is Wayne Pierce of Pierce HD in DeKalb IL. He's been in business since 58 and whenever a new model came out that he thought would be "special" in some way, he just kept one. XLCR's with ZERO miles. XR1000 with ZERO miles. Tons of other stuff too in his museum attached to the stealership.

heres my 76, rigid xlch with molded tank and rear fender with a small bob...motor was built by mike wells and is now .10 over, will be installing the electronic ignition and a lepara bare bones seat this week...i just need to find a carb now...not sure which way to go...I would like to change out the front end for a inverted springer...but would ruin the original vintage look of the bike...guess its one of those things, always changing things..

I bought my XLCH brand new in 77, rode it all over Australia for about four years, then left it in my dad's shed when I went overseas. I just got around to getting it out of the shed this month, and here it is. That's my grandfather's old J model behind it. Nope, we never let one get away.
I am going to put the Sporty back to more or less orignal, with the 2 gallon tank etc and start riding it again.
Talk about a blast from the past.

Hey I have one for you Iron Men ... along with the story posted with it...

Here's something you don't run across too often. This bike was left to 2
brothers who's stepfather had bought it new in 57. He only had about 22,000
miles on it when he died. It sat for years and was all rusted up but it was a
complete bike. They had all the original parts replated down to the nuts and
bolts. I did all the painting on it and helped them get it running. The VIN #'s
said it was around the first 250 built.

The bad part about the whole deal is they don't even ride. They were just
interested in making a buck on it. I was just glad to see it redone and maybe
it will live on for another 50 years! They were trying to sell it for 25,000. I
don't even know if they sold it. I don't see them anymore since the company
we worked for was sold and split up and sold again.

Here are a few pictures of my brother and my 1974 Sportsters. Both are a "work in progess"

The Red one is mine; I just got it last week, it smokes so I'll be rebuilding the motor and then driving the crap out of it. I got it non running, so at first I hated the kicker, but now I love it...makes me feel like I'm driving a real motorcycle!

http://www.oldskoolyzf.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=921&g2_serialNumber=2

The "John Deere" bike is my brothers before he started customizing it. The other pictures are after he started customizing it. He first built his own custom hardtail, fender, oil tank, exhaust and repainted it, then he polished a carb from an old GMC truck and mounted it up with a sediment bowl and electric fuel pump(runs pretty good, but a little rich, he needs to rejet it). Now he's just finishing up the bars and springer front end he built from Ford Model A radius rods. He should finish the welding and get it painted up pretty soon. That shows my "amazing" MS paint skill to give him whitewalls....be couldn't decide if he wanted them, but that picture made up his mind...he said he also will paint the hubs and rims black and leave the spokes chrome. He'll also blackout the engine covers and I think we've both decided to dual plug the heads.

Thanks everyone else for the great pictues, all inspiring!

no. NO! She's got her foot on the starter. That's bad. I can't help think she's gonna break something. Really, really depressing, I know. Before I started my rebuild I had this nasty leak on the starter gasket that would make a little pool on the top of the tranny case and leak slowly down the back of bike. It was a pain just to figure out where the leak was... I don't wish that upon anybody. Have her put her foot on the footpeg or the seat, then I'll be happy. :)

82 Sportster-25th Anniv. Even though it looks fairly modified, I had every part I took off to make it look that way. I could have changed it back to original, no problem. The rear fender is a stocker I cut, welded, smoothed, and painted. (I know everyone cringes when someone says they painted their own bike, but I have been custom painting for 20 years- so it was no hack job :p ) Notice the cool Jagermeister points cover.

Below is my current bike. A 1973. I like this one loads better.
