I just want to give you all some information about the cookies that are required to access The XL Forum since some members have some concerns about cookies on their computers.
You must accept the cookies in order to log on to The XL Forum, any PHPNuke based website or just about any other type of internet forum. If you do not accept the cookies then everytime you change pages on the website you will be logged off.
1. The XL Forum cookies DO NOT collect personal information.
2. I, and the other XL Forum admins and moderators, CAN NOT read the cookies that The XL Forum creates on your computer.
3. The XL Forum cookies are used to save your personal settings such as you login name and password if you have choosen for your browser to save it.
4. Cookies are NOT spyware. Some people who are new to the Internet believe that Cookies are EVIL..but they are not.
5. I and the other admins can see the IP address of your computer. This is required for security reasons. If a member makes problems on the website they can be banned from the website based upon their IP address , membername, and email address.
6. Other info that is collected by default is what browser you are using (Firefox, IE, Netscape, Opera, etc...), your OS (Windows, Unix, MAC, Solaris, Linux, FBSD, etc...), your screen resolution settings. None of this info is given to 3rd parties and never will be. All websites collect this information in order to improve their services.
Please feel free to ask any questions about the cookies that THE XL FORUM creates on your computer.
If you are concerned about cookies on your computer I encourage you to read this website http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/i-034.shtml. Here you can read about many of the rumors and myths about Internet cookies.
Here is an excerpt from the CIAC website:
The vulnerability of systems to damage or snooping by using web browser cookies is essentially nonexistent. Cookies can only tell a web server if you have been there before and can pass short bits of information (such as a user number) from the web server back to itself the next time you visit. Most cookies last only until you quit your browser and then are destroyed. A second type of cookie known as a persistent cookie has an expiration date and is stored on your disk until that date. A persistent cookie can be used to track a user's browsing habits by identifying him whenever he returns to a site. Information about where you come from and what web pages you visit already exists in a web server's log files and could also be used to track users browsing habits, cookies just make it easier.
