Justin, was just thinking about the micro tach and how great a product it is...Just wondering how you came to develop the micro tach? Do have a degree in engineering? How did you come to figure out the inner workings of Harley's serial interface?

Anyway, thanks for one of the best things I put on my scoot....:banana

Justin is an engineer by trade and a nice guy by choice. I don't think you can go wrong with his product.

Wowee1,

Yes, I am an electrical engineer. I've spend the past 15 years designing communication systems for other folks and doing crazy stuff like transmitting 10Gigbits per second across little pieces of copper. I still have this day job. microTach's can't pay the mortgage.

I started this whole things over 2years ago after I saw a post on this site which said that the Digital bus was SAE J1850 standard protocol.

My initial idea was to build a direct replacement for the existing speedo in the custom and replace it with one with LCD display, and LED's around the site. I spent a bunch of money building up the prototype and discovered that I didn't like it. I thought, why am I building this thing that is going to cost $500; when if someone else was selling it; I wouldn't buy it.

So I re-grouped and said "what is missing that I am trying to solve" can I Keep-It-Simple-Stupid (KISS principle of design). Don't worry, I'm suppose to be the stupid one, not you. :) And so was born the microTach Tachometer. Ultra-small, seemless fit onto bike; for not too much $$.

By far the most difficult part of the whole thing was getting the mechanical/packaging right. It costs ALOT of money to have someone make something for you. And most won't even talk to you unless you are ordering 1000's. So, I figure out how to do 3D drawings, found a local machine shop willing to work with me. And we finally have a product.

Now if I could just figure out how to sell more than 1 a week!

Hope you enjoyed my story, and I hope everyone continues to enjoy their microTach and make sure to show everyone, and tell them where to get it.

Cheers,

Justin

Thanks for the bio, Justin. It takes a lot of determination these days to have an idea and realize it...You have a great product and I'm sure it will do well. I show everyone I know who rides the Micro tach. As I said, it's one of the best things I've put on my bike.....

Thanks! It has definitely helped. Just FYI. Getting into the "New Widget" section is free. It's AIM way of teasing people into advertising in their mag.

It worked on me; I will have a paid ad showing up in a couple months.
