Ok, so I lied. But with "sex" in the title, you'll read on!

Tachometer question: I come from the world of performance outboards where we run by the tach initially and then tune throttles until that magic pitch hum indicates that the engines are in synch, hence the question about tachs (that was for flathead who I'm sure hates these dials... :laugh ).

My 1200R (stage 1 + SEII and dynojet): I run about 2800-3200 when just hangin' out. I feel that adding power in any gear from that point gives the most powerful and quickest response. Any lower, she lugs; any higher, except when powering on, seems to be a strain, both from the sound and (modest) vibration standpoint. Am I being overly sensitive? Shift points are often around 4000 (again, unless powering through gears) or even less.

What are your comfort ranges for those who use a tach instead of speedo?

Hey I come from performance outboards too. I'm just down the road from you too. Kalamazoo, MI is where I'm from. What lakes did you hang out at? I was usually at Gun, Gull or Hardy Damn on the weekends. I had a Mirage Jaguar (18.5 foot modified tunnell with a modified Merc 200). Dam good time nothing quite like flying across the lake is there? The Sportster is a hole different kind of fun though, I love it.

Power-on from any RPM is likely to give you vibes until you get into the powerband for the respective gear. Wouldn't worry about the vibes as long as it isn't sustained over the entire rev of any certain (high) gear... Might try to get to higher than 3000 RPM to get more HP workin'. Any sporty (1200R included) needs revs. If it responds well at 3k ok. Does your 1200 have a tach (I assume it does)? Crank that pup up to 4.5-5k and then shift and let her fly. If you want to, she'll do it. Be safe...

Edit--Don't listen to the damn thing unless it starts makin clankin' noises, and if it's less than 5 years old you can discount that anyway.
