I got a few questions about foward controls, 1st I've been looking on ebay and found a few, some expensive some super cheap and some in the middle. I'm looking to get the middle of the road ones as I really don't $400 to drop on the good ones. Also I see some say 86 to 03 and some 86 to 90 whats the difference between the two sets?

I have the $170.00 ones made by Custom Chrome, I like them. They are heavy duty, good chrome. I did change the O Ring pegs to the ISO pegs.
Can't go wrong for the price.

Whats the difference from the 91 and up? I ask because the price difference is like $60 more for the 86 to 90

Be careful on ebay. Sometimes the seller doesn't know for sure if a part is compatible with certain years (or if something has to be changed in order for it to work). I would check the brand and part number they are selling, and then cross reference it at the manufacturer's website for compatibility. Whether or not you return it, who wants to spend 3 weeks waiting, getting, and shipping back with still no part?

My forward controls (I went back to my factory mids after 8 years) were a Drag Specialties Sundance style I got for cheap. Besides compatibility, I would suggest spending extra on pegs that have some kind of vibration dampening. My Sundace pegs had basically none, and my feet would vibrate to sleep at highway rides that lasted over an hour.

If money's tight, you might do better to find some cheap highway pegs.

Dave76,
I don't know if this stuff is in your price range, but J&P Cycles catalog offers some good stuff to take a look at anyway. For Sportsters in the age range of 86-03, I have found no less than 4 manufacturers. Their catalogs are free and are a veritable wish-list of "what to get next". You might give them a look-see.

When I bought my '03 I looked around at a lot of different forward controls, and elected to go with the OEM Harley ones. They're not as pretty as some of the others, but they're dead solid. I'd recomend them.

I'd go with the H-D parts {Xmas 20% off sales are coming} :D

I got the fleabay custom chrome ones, they are a different design from the HD set, and work fine. The difference between model years (your original question) is that the brake lever & master cylinder mounting changed 90--91, or there 'bouts. Some sets that use a bellcrank for the brake include the parts for both, some include only parts for one or the other. Some sets push directly on the master cylinder like the HD set, and avoid the bellcrank issue.

I have a set of the Custom Chrome type that I took off my wife's 87. They can be had for a very reasonable price. They worked good when they came off. Rubber "O" rings are all gone, chrome looks good. The brake side needs a bushing that should be pretty easy to make/source.

I got some pics but due to it getting dark earlier now you really can't see them all that good. Oh I got a chrome oil tank coming Friday, and a Harly eagle chrome top for the carb.

I made the mistake of buying a set off e gay which were for up to '91 but the guy had quoted up to '03. Totally different mounting brackets for the earlier sets. When I complained the guy threatened me with neg feedback. I sold them on at cost price.

Anyone here tried the Kuryakyn Deluxe for 86'-'03? The shifter and brakes comes with the ISO type. Looks really cool and I'm thinking hard.... Comments please...

If I'm right those are the pretty expensive ones?

They seem rather pricey - but more worse if they do not fit for purpose. That's what I would like to know.......
