View Full Version : Ironhead Low RPM stumbling

I finally got my 73 going, It has a S&S E carb on it, and when I am stuck in traffic going slow it seems to go smooth, and then ever now and then it kind of jumps forward a little, (like I did a quick snap of the throttle) it isn't a huge jump, just enough to feel it. Is this normal, or do I need to do some tuning to my carb? or is this a timing issue? or a valve issue? It seems to only happen in he low rpms, when I hit the throttle there is no hesitation at all, and it just takes off like a bat out of hell, and it cruises in the 3-5k range supper smooth! Also, since I have been able to star and run the bike it seems to have slowed the oil leak down quite a bit!

Are you lugging? Don't lug it!

clutch slipping a little ???
maybe, but wouldn't that get worse when I hit the throttle? there is no delay or anything when i hit the throttle, I twist it and it goes!

I don't have it lugging, this is happening when I am moving at about 2,000 rpm in 1st gear.

on my EVO, 2000rpm is most definitely lugging...
I don't have enough experience yet with my IH to know about it though... but just looking at the size of the valves on my IH, I would think it was made more for high RPM usage than for low?
why are the IH valves so big for a little 900cc motor? did HD really model the heads correctly when they did their Computational fluid dynamics analysis on them back in '57 (or whenever?)

2000 is just above idle! LOL

ok, So I think of lugging as when you are running below idle (I am use to Japanese bikes that idle at 1k I know that when I have the bike warmed up and idling it isn't getting that gallop sound that I have heard other people do, it is faster then that (I am also not so sure how exact my tac is, so when its saying 2k it might be faster, might be slower) what I do know is if I get stuck behind slow traffic it puts along nicely and then lurches forward a little and then continues to put along...(I have my hand completely off of the clutch while doing this)

ok, I just got home from work, and I think you are right, it is the clutch slipping, Ill have to adjust it when I get home tomorrow.
