Holiday prediction: More drivers, greater risk

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Because Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Saturdays this season, federal transportation officials predict a record number of holiday travelers will drive and increase the possibility of deadly crashes.

AAA estimates that 51 million people will be on the roads, up 2.9 percent from last year. That's the largest number projected in the 11 years AAA has been forecasting holiday travel.

"These two long weekends will mean more concentrated travel, so expect crowded roads, increased delays and risky driving behavior," AAA President Robert Darbelnet said.

Busier roads will increase the risk of deadly accidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The agency is predicting 136 deaths a day on December 24-26 and December 31-January 2. NHTSA said 45 percent of those accidents will involve drivers with blood-alcohol levels of .08 or higher.

Last year, 512 people died over the Christmas holiday and 530 over the New Year's holiday, NHTSA officials said. The holidays were considered a four-day period last year. They are considered three-day holidays this year, so it's difficult to compare NHTSA's data from year to year. Forty-eight percent of the accidents in 2003 involved drunken drivers, NHTSA said.

Every state will have sobriety checkpoints, ad campaigns or other ways of cracking down on drunken drivers this season, the Governors Highway Safety Association said.

"Police will be enforcing the law this holiday season, and there will be no exceptions and no excuses," said Col. Jim Champagne, chairman of the Governors Highway Safety Association.

Throw in a little inclement weather, and we're all going to be in for a good time! So take it easy out there and if you are going to travel, be real attentive! "They're" really are out to getcha! Mike

Gordy, I've had days like that, too, where I think about after that many close calls, maybe it's a sign to pull over and wait for that "bad karma cloud" to pass over before I get hurt! Glad to hear you're ok and hope you add that trophy mirror to your collection!

I've had three near miss in the past couple days. Idiots and their shopping and talking on the phone. One guy came straight through a Taco Bell, trying to take a short cut at a corner red light, and pulled right in front of me. Had to hit the rear brakes harder than the front to skid the right side of the bike parallel to the side of his truck, and then my leg was only and inch from his driver's side front wheel. He rolls down the window and says sorry and drives away. If I'd had my Yukon, no way I would not have hit him. Also, fortunate for him, one of the few times I'd didn't have my gun on me, for it would have been tempting.

Every holiday season it's the same thing.:angry :cloudmad :redmad :madtwo :headbang :smackh
