FYI ... Folks, I just wrote an 04-05 cam install procedure with pics. This install How-To is posted in the Engine and Electrical forum if you may be interested.

Although this was written for the 04-05 XL1200, I would think that the majority of it would apply to the 883 and earlier year XL Sportys.
Hope it helps with someone thinking about changing cams themselves.

Thanks Sir, now I have a winter project. How long did it take you, and what tools did you need.

Nick ... No really special tools. You will need a set of SAE (not metric) allen wrenches and a set of (SAE) Hex head type sockets ... these are those allen wrenches mounted in a socket that you would snap into the end of ratchet ... if ya know what I mean. You can get these in a pack of 7 different sizes at AutoZone, etc for about $14. Of those 7, you won't need any other sizes.
You also need a T25 Torx bit to remove the screw holding the plastic breathers in the lower rocker covers. The breathers need to be removed in order to replace the rubber gasket. (gasket fits under the breather in one place)

I have found out that in a lot of applications that a T27 Torx is needed all over the bike when a lot of T25's keep stripping. Sometimes T27's are hard to come by in a set, but it is worth it when one day you strip a bolt and have to drill it out or something. I asked a mechanic at the dealership and he said he barely uses a T25.
Turbota- you're making me want to spend my tightly wound money. I guess you have to come off of it sooner or later though right?!

That is excellent, Turbota! Makes me want to tear into the engine, but not today. I think I would rather follow your "how to" than H-D's. Good work!

Thanks Billy.
BTW ... I liked your picture you posted of yourself and all the Howdy Doody gang.
Mr. Bluster still looks good, but still a bit 'cranky' looking, if you axe me! :)

BTW, the cam change is all complete ... Got ready to start it ... And ... I installed the throttle cables backwards! Now to roll on the throttle, all you need to do is roll the grip forewards!
I gave up ... I will fix to tomorrow, and then attempt an engine start.

The throttle reversal is funny! I can picture myself doing the same thing! :D
Be sure to post how things go with start-up & break-in, as well as your riding impressions. Very cool job!
