I'm still in the planning stages for doing a street tracker conversion on my 883/1200 sporty. I have a 1989 Sporty with the stock 4-speed tranny and gearing. Since the conversion on the motor it pulls great through all the gears, but I have wondered how much better my low end would be if I regeared it. Which would work better for me dropping down one tooth in the front our going bigger in the back? Or, should I just leave it as is?

Your recommendations and thoughts are appreciated. regards, chieftd

P.S. Here's the power numbers it's putting out:
82 hp and 72 ft lbs (I'm please with the numbers for sure)

P.S.S. I'm not real concerned about overall top end performance as a street tracker, thus the thought of regearing for better low end performance. :)

A front sprocket change is easier to do. You don't have to take off the whole rear wheel. Also, a smaller front sprocket means more chain slack as opposed to a larger rear sprocket which may take your chain adjustment to it's limits, depending on the increase in size in the sprocket.

I went from a 29 tooth front to a 32tooth (for highway cruzin) and the loss of low end power was amazing , It still gets up and goes but with the 29 it was hard to not spin the rear tyre or lift the front

If your into it get a few differant sizes and see which one performs the way you like , there easy to change (about an hour after you do the first one) and only about $30
