Yesterday Susan windowed the motor on her S1 doing about 180mph ... front Carillo snapped at the big end. Tore out one of the shock mount bolts and the back end dropped a couple inches as a result, good thing the other one held or the wheel would've locked.

It rained overnight and the course didn't open until about 2:30. I got one pass in with the nitro bike. Really. really hard to control the wheelspin. Worked it up to speed in top gear, within sight of the timed mile, and she nosed over. Motor would idle but that's all. I coasted to about the middle of the timed mile and she lit off again. I exited the timed mile at close to 200 but only averaged 157. The bike did the exact same thing on the last run last year.

We went looking for a fuel system issue. Found nothing but rearranged a few things just because we wanted to change something to give us a chance for a different result. Got it all buttoned up, went to go start it, and the battery was dead. WTF? It was fully charged before the run. Hooked up the charger and it went immediately to float mode. Tried 3 chargers, same result. Put the voltmeter on: no load 12.9V, fuel pump and ignition on 9V, hit starter button 2V. All electrics off, hook up charger, 14.5v and charger goes to float. The battery was clearly toast.

We borrowed the battery out of the XBRR, which is a smaller battery but it's brand new. Works fine. But much too late to make another pass today. We'll see tomorrow if we touched the problem. Crossing our fingers that the battery was the issue. That hot-dog nitro ignition takes a lot of juice to fire at high rpm so it's entirely possible.

Just got home.

The battery did fix the issue with the nitro bike, it ran perfect after that. I even backed out the fuel system changes we made. Put a total of 5 passes on the bike this week. Didn't break 200, our fastest pass was 194 and change. Limited by traction, I had more than enough power, but I just hit a wall of air. I could make the tach climb all I wanted to, the bike just wasn't going to go faster without more traction. That rain we got on Sunday night really messed up the salt and it never fully recovered over the course of the week.

Susan did get on the XBRR for some passes, but had the same problem I did. She could go through the timed mile at 8000rpm and the bike was geared to be doing 170 at that speed but it would only go 155. We even took a tooth off the back and got the exact same result, 155mph at 8000rpm. She just hit a wall of air and the bike wasn't going to go faster without more traction.

Bottom line was that I just wasn't well prepared for the conditions. Really there was only one of the three bikes that was well set up for this slippery of a track, because we've raced that bike so long that we've seen this before and I prepared for it long ago, and of course that's the bike we blew up the first day. Sigh.

The nitro bike did bag a reasonable record though, I think it's around 191mph.

This is one of our speed secrets. We've found that extra crankcase ventilation really helps reduce windage and drag on the crank thus making more horsepower. Disconnecting the front rod from the crank on the big end also reduces friction.

That's ugly, thankfully didn't lock the wheel. Ouch!

Chasing land speed records must be an expensive hobby.

Just to add to what Aaron accomplished this past week. He once again was the fastest American V-twin at the meet. This on a "naked" bike with no fairing!! I believe this is Aarons 5th time to win this award out of 7 years!!

CONGRADULATIONS!:clap on your record.

To bad for the bad track conditions and the mechanical problems. But, Team NRHS does it AGAIN!:wonderlan:clap
