View Full Version : Sporty falls flat on its face...
bigbluebowtie 11th October 2007, 02:28 Well, 13.5 @ 99.09 is the best I could muster up. .432 Reaction time, 2.3 :doh 60 foot, 8.7 @81 in the eighth. BAD. I know my Sporty has more in her, but why does it fall on it's face after the eighth in third at 5000+ RPMs? Do I need to tune the carb some more (probably) or is my valve train all f'd up? Please let me know all you racers! Thanks!

Ingreen99 11th October 2007, 02:43 Slap some stickers on her, I heard they can speed things up.:banana
racerwill 11th October 2007, 02:48 before you blame the valvetrain (probably valve springs) go 2 sizes bigger on the main jet and make another pass.......... it's possible that you're running outta fuel at WOT and high load....... that motor should spin right uo to 7000 then hit the rev limiter.....

TnG 11th October 2007, 02:54 Not a lot of info to go on here, but I'll give you a few WAG's! If you could describe the symtom better than it falls on its face it would help. My first guess is your running the carb. dry. Maybe a fuel filter, or petcock restriction, kink in the hose? My understanding of that cam is that it works better in the lower RPM's than the upper due to less overlap. What kind of RPM are you getting in first and second and does it pull hard all the way throught in those gears?
bigbluebowtie 11th October 2007, 04:59 Right up to rev limiter (6500RPM) in first and second, REAL good. Here is the situation...I am goin' good through first and second, forget about the 60 foot, that'll change with time...hit third and once it hits 5k, it just accelerates like it has 2hp. If I short shift it I gain maybe 2-3 mph at BEST. Is it running out of gas? I have a 180 main in the stock CV40, no dynojet kit, lightened slide bs, just stock with a 180 main. Is it the opposite, too rich? I am taking her to the dyno the end of the month to see what is really going on...but until then, I am on pins and needles. Thanks for the replies :tour !

Had to be said.

bigbluebowtie 11th October 2007, 05:15 LOL! Well, I am a fan of bare metal, but what do I know...I think bare metal is faster!

I'd say that's good advice and an inexpensive fit.
The 1200S and the Swiss models are running larger then 180 main jets.
With all you've done to your bike you should easily be make more power then they do.
donniej 11th October 2007, 17:53 your reaction time could use a little work, too.
Mattbastard 11th October 2007, 18:19 Are you taking lunch between shifts?
NRHS Sales 11th October 2007, 18:27 The 551 cams are part of the problem. They have very short duration which means they are not a good high revving cam.

Rob Henderson 11th October 2007, 18:32 Would a Diet help?
bigbluebowtie 12th October 2007, 14:43 Probably all the suggested things above would help. At the end of the day I was doing .060 reaction times, figured that out. Maybe I do need another set of cams...anyone need some good used .551's? I know you are right on that Dan. The .551's were cheap and they got me better than stock. I think I might go with the SE .536's or .575's or another set if anyone thinks I need something else?
As to the shifts, I do have forwards on it yet, but it didn't take that long to shift, really. I didn't even let off the gas, just feathered the clutch, and let 'er buck.
Rob, probably losing a few pounds would help too! I like beer too much...
Carl-04XL 12th October 2007, 15:22 Well, I hope you have clear on the tins. Sporties don't look good in rust.
As for the 1/4, well, listen to those who know. I just do occasional runs on the street, at least up to the posted limit. (Yeah, right!) And I'm still stock on the motor.
crashin 12th October 2007, 16:57 ...anyone need some good used .551's?
:D how much you askin'?
bigbluebowtie 13th October 2007, 13:26 Carl-04XL, I know what you mean on listening to the others. Only problem is, nobody at the striop I race it races a Sporty! I am the only one...maybe I can get my wife into it...
Crashin, as for the cams, I would let them go for $100 plus shipping. I have a set of V-Thunder anti pump up lifters that are BRAND new, never used, that I would let go with them for an additional $50. PM me if you are interested...
