I'd like to give my Sporty the NightTrain look. HD sells chrome covers for the engine, has anyone painted or powdercoated them? (EI: cheaper than doing up the "real" covers)

Well, being that the 04-05s 1200R come with powder coated covers already. I think that if you cleaned them real well a good can of paint would work pretty well. If you have an 883 I think you would have to strip the clear cote off and then paint them. You could also powder cote em flat black. Don't know to much else.

I know that powder coating insulates things. Just a considerstion you might want to think about. Paint is ok but it's difficult to find a paint that looks good for very long IMO. I used a balck crinkle from a spray can and baked it on my barrels. I wasn't impressed in a few months.

My covers are at the powdercoater right now getting the black wrinkle finish. He wasn't sure how they were going to turn out but he was going to try.

Are you useing the original cases or the add-on covers? The covers are short money so I may experiment with them.

I got the cases back from the pewdercoaters the other day. They look awesome, they scuffed up the original finish and powdercoated over the top of it. I can't express how happy I am with the results. He also did the lower fork tubes, triple tree clamps, and air cleaner in a gloss black. The covers were done in a satin wrinkle black finish. He did all of the work for $300.00 a price that can't be beat.

Pictures would be interesting to see.

Vtwin have covers that bolt over the existing cases you could buy these get them dechromed and paint or coat them black.. cheap easy to do and you have the best of both worlds.

I'll take some tonight. The place that did the work is a local shop in Battle Creek, Michigan. I'll post some pictures and if anyone is interested in haveing this place do some work let me know and I'll talk with the guy.

Here is a picture of the gloss black and the black wrinkle finish. They did an excellent job masking the parts off and plugging any threaded holes. If you would like them to do any work for you contact me randyjeddington@eaton.com and I'll call them and set something up.
