Hi,

I have an 03 883. I am looking to get together a mobile tool kit. I have looked at cruz tools and others but i have some tools layin around the house, so i think if i get a few others tools i could have a complete set cheaper than buying an already completed set.

So my question, what do i need exactly in emergency tools? including tire repair.

Thanks

Welcome aboard. I don't care much for the Cruz line of tools. They're overpriced, look a little cheesy to me and include things you'll likely not need or use. There's some differing opinions but here's my list of mobile tools. Keep in mind that I only want to provide for emergency "get me home" repairs. If you have a later model bike and it's kept in good condition, you shouldn't need much. IMO anything beyond minor electrical or carb problems probably can't be done roadside by the average rider anyway.

Folding set of allen wrenches
four in one screwdriver
small channel locks or pliers
small adjustable wrench
wire stripper and electrical tape
small flashlight
(optional) 1/4" socket set

This list is of course is adjustable depending on your mechanical abilities and/or willingness to take on major roadside repairs. Beyond that IMHO you're only lugging around extra weight. Some will recommend spare plugs, socket sets, tire repair kits etc. while others carry enough tools for a rebuild but practicality says you shouldn't be having fouled plugs on an '03 and while tires may go flat, I measure the probablities.

The best protection from break downs is regular maintenance.

My toolkit (except on long hauls):

One can of beer
Folding Torx set
Folding Allen set
8 in 1 screwdriver
small flashlight
spanner wrench (for shocks)
small crescent wrench
Electrical tape

as for tire repair....I have my HOG card and AAA+ RV :) I don't have a compressor onboard, anyway .....

I make a call, and have a beer while I wait........

I forgot to mention... The most important and necessary tool in your collection is the Factory Service Maunal. Without it, yer shooting blind.

Sears actually sells a motorcycle tool kit (foreign and American models) that also include a Torx drive set (I just got one for Chrismas early). Not a bad investment for a pretty complete set in a sturdy pouch. Add a set of plugs and plug wrench, wire ties (as Flathead noted) and you're home.

I don't know how Sportys are about this but I used to carry a spare spark plug(s) and the apropriate wrench. Motorcycle engines are notorious for fouling plugs out when you are in the middle of nowhere :frownone

Okay, now where do you keep yer tools at. I'm thinking about making my old emission hoo-ya into a tool container. That way I can mount it in the stock location under the bike. I dont really like the look of a tool pouch on the front of the bike, but ya gotta have tools. And I dont think anyone mentioned bailing wire.

I've seen toolpouches on the downtubes of the frame. Wouldn't have even noticed it if I hadn't lookes right at it. Otherwise, mine looks pretty good covering my risers.

I put mine on the back of the sissy bar facing rear. Rests on the rack...looks OK to me but covers part of the HD Eagle Badge.
