Another week gone...another on the way.

There is an awful lot going on, on XL Forum lately so if you have not visited in a while please take the time to check it out.
Chuck's (cantolina) Bambi thread was resurected last week after lieing dormant for over a year. I thought that was
pretty cooland I am sure Chuck thought so too. I saw another post where Ole was again talking about his sister getting bit by a
moose. Or did Ole's sister bite the moose? I am pretty sure many of us are still trying to figure that out.

If you want to see a VERY nice Sportster chopper you can always do a search for the thread by Antique Engine where he shows us the work that he has done to get his Sporty just the way he wants it.

If you are into Buell's look for KevM's controvertial thread where he spills the beans on rumors about a Buell Dirt bike! Will it
happen? Is it true? Let us know what you think here: http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=46426 .

Now that I am getting back to putting this newletter out every week I am looking for people who might be interested in contributing to the
content of this newsletter. If you would like to have your own column in this weekly newsletter please email me at bplinson@xlforum.net or
send me a PM on the forum. You can have your own Tech Tip column, humor, stories, Sportster or Buell Photo layout whatever.

My First Bike
- By Don Christie - XL Forum Member OZARK

My first bike like my first girl friend will always be special no matter how many others come and go.

I first saw my bike parked behind a garage in a bunch of weeds and miscellaneous junk a couple of blocks from my home. I was 13 or 14 at
the time. The year was 1963 or 64. I wanted a motorcycle so bad I could taste it.

A few years went by. The weeds grew taller and the bike slowly rusted. The people who lived there moved, the bike stayed. When I turned
fifteen I got a job at a local restaurant. After almost a year I had saved a huge sum of $300.

I approached the new people who had moved into the house about buying the bike. The bike was a 1959 Sportster. We struck a deal for $250.00.
I dug it out and with the help of a few friends rolled it home. It is worth mentioning that I knew absolutely nothing about motorcycles. I
thought they were like a bicycle only much neater!

I gassed it up, put air in the tires and tried to start it. I weighed about 100 pounds at the time and couldn't kick it over. We
all tried our luck and couldn't get it to start. So we decided to roll start it. It discovered the hard way that you
don't pop the clutch on a motorcycle in first gear while trying to make a 90 degree turn at the end of a steep drive way. I had
logged a total of thirty feet on a bike before I experienced my first crash.

We picked it up and with three friends pushing I made it to the top of a steep hill. Popping the clutch resulted in a couple of blurb, blurb
noises. After a couple of tries my buddies and I were beat.

We repeated the process almost every evening and finally get it to start occasionally which resulted in a few more crashes. The brakes
didn't really work and I didn't know how to ride a motorcycle. This was the only motorcycle I had ever ridden and I didn't know it was too big for me. Luckily I didn't break any bones but I learned what gravel rash was. It became clear to me why bikers wear leather jackets.

A guy lived in our neighborhood that was generally avoided by most people. He built hot rod cars and pissed off the neighbors by making noise and partying with his friends. These guys drove loud cars and motorcycles and were generally scary with leather jackets and DA haircuts.

Finally one day when me and my little mob were pushing the old sporty down the street he called me over and asked if I would like to get the
motorcycle to run. I was really leery of this guy and his scary friends but I wanted that bike to run. I learned that his name was Ron and he
was a mechanic. This guy seemed “old” to me. I guess he was about 25.

Ron showed me how to take the tank off and clean it. It was full of rust and we got about a cup of rusty water out of it. We cleaned the
carb, it was full of junk. Finally he showed me how to change and set the plugs and points. Ron turned out to be a really nice guy
and patently showed me how to perform each step. His buddies seemed impressed by my gravel rash collection. One of the guys gave me a
ragged leather jacket about two sizes too big. After we went over the bike it would start on the first or second kick. I was even able to
kick start it myself sometimes. I will always remember how good it felt the first time I kicked the rusty old beast over! Since that time if I
get the chance to help a new rider I do.

The mufflers went in the trash and I was ready to terrorize the neighborhood. About this time it finally dawned on me that my Dad knew
what he was talking about when he said I needed a drivers licence and plates on the bike if I was going to ride the bike on the street. I got
my permit then tried to get plates. I learned another lesson, you need a title to get plates. The guy who sold me the bike didn't
have a title and I couldn't find the original owner.

Being a dumb kid I kept riding the bike. As I learned to ride I got noisier and faster and of course it never occurred to me to wear a
helmet. I learned the rush of riding a bike too fast, the vibration, the howl of the wind and bugs hitting you in the face. I was
hooked for life. The neighbors were not pleased with my riding style or the noise and started calling the police. The police tried to
stop me a couple of times but being a kid I knew every inch of the neighborhood and could duck into places where a car couldn't
go. This went on for a few months and I was finally caught. The police told me if they caught me again the bike was getting impounded and I
was going to jail. Looking back I know they cut me a break. No tickets, just a good butt chewing.

By now I knew a lot more about motorcycles and found one I was a lot more comfortable with. I traded the Sporty for a shiny two year old
Sears Allstate 175 CC ? I could actually start (and stop) this one without help. But that's another story!

Ozark

If you have a story to tell PM it to OZARK and he will get it put onto the XLF Weekly Newsletter.

Joke of the Week - TWO COWS and WORLD GOVERNMENT- Submitted by Little
Dave from Northern Ireland

SOCIALISM: You have 2 cows, you give one to your neighbour.

COMMUNISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and gives you some
milk.

FASCISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and sells you some milk.

NAZISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and shoots you.

BUREAUCRACY: You have 2 cows. The State takes both, shoots one, milks
the other, then throws the milk away...

SURREALISM: You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take
harmonica lessons

TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull.
Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell them and retire
on the income.

AN AMERICAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You sell one, and force the
other to produce the milk of four cows. Later, you hire a consultant to
analyse why the cow has dropped dead.

A FRENCH CORPORATION: You have two cows. You go on strike, organise a
riot, and block the roads, because you want three cows.

A JAPANESE CORPORATION: You have two cows. You redesign them so they
are
one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the
milk. You then create a clever cow cartoon image called 'cowkimon' and
market it worldwide.

A GERMAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You re-engineer them so they
live for 100 years, eat once a month, and milk themselves.

AN ITALIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows, but you don't know where
they are. You decide to have lunch.

A RUSSIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You count them and learn you
have five cows. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You
count them again and learn you have 2 cows. You stop counting cows and
open another bottle of vodka.

A SWISS CORPORATION: You have 5000 cows. None of them belong to you.
You charge the owners for storing them.

CHINESE CORPORATION: You have two cows. You have 300 people milking
them. You claim that you have full employment, and high bovine
productivity, and execute the newsman who reported the real situation.

AN INDIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. You worship them.

IRAQI CORPORATION: Everyone thinks you have lots of cows. You tell them
that you have none. No-one believes you, so they bomb you and invade
your country. You still have no cows, but at least now you are part of
a Democracy....

WELSH CORPORATION: You have two cows. The one on the left looks very
attractive.

AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION: You have two cows. Business seems pretty good.
You close the office and go for a few beers to celebrate.

A BRITISH CORPORATION: You have two cows. The Government says you have
to buy a licence to milk them, but first you have to do a risk
assessment, which only the government Quango is allowed to carry out.
They charge you 5 times the
cost of doing it. They find that the three legged stool is a risk under
health and safety. You have to buy the European Community (EC) approved
5 legged stool that is designed to support a milk maid of up to 250
kilos. It is too heavy to carry. The stool exceeds EC weight lifting
limits for workers by 4 kilos, which just happens to be the weight of
the fifth leg. To shift the stool from one cow to the other you
therefore need a special (EC approved) trolley. The new stool and
trolley are so expensive that you have to mortgage one of the cows to
pay for them and pay for the mandatory training course you must take to
get your licence to milk the cows. You sell your milk to the
supermarket chain that pays you next to nothing for it, and then they
sell it to their customers for four times what they paid you. Then they
release a press statement about how wonderful they are to support
British Cows. The rest of the world
thinks your cows are mad but you and your cows know that it is not true
and anyway the rest of the world have no intention of identifying and
counting their mad cows so people in other countries don't know their
cows are really, really barmy do they. You sell your cows to a Polish
migrant worker and your farm to a Russian 'investment bank'and then you
leave to buy a villa by the sea in a country where it is sunny and the
cost of milk is a tenth the cost of milk at home.

They don't have a National Health Service.......but you are so happy
and relaxed your health improves and you live to be a hundred.
