Got my slip ons last night. Finished the install this morning, and holy cow does this bike sound good.

I live at 8,000' elevation and was running a little rich stock. The muffler change improved performance at all rpms. :D

I'll get the hurricane flow on soon and then deal with the carb.

chuckp has SEIIs and I have the CS exhaust. We did some riding a short while back and I have to say that mine is louder and (in my opinon) has a better sound, more base than the SEIIs.

Keep a eye on the K&N fiber backing plate mine got all warped and started leaking around the gasket area in no time at all. I ended up getting the S&S and threw the K&N in the trash can, This was after they first came out so I would imagine they have the problem fixed by now, just keep a occasional eye on it.

I have the Cycle Shack Slash cuts, performance and look are great, but I'm a little disappointed with the sound.
For me, the sound of the slash cuts are too raspy, sound like an old ford from the '30. It's like a guitar amplifier with too much treble and gain and no bass at all.

I was looking a very deep sound, with lots of bass... Slash cuts don't do that.

I have this 2 mufflers
Cycle Shack slash cuts V/S SEII Slash down

CS slash cuts are way more louder but too raspy and poor deep sound.
SEII are more quiet but the tone is deeper, more bass.

I Do Not Know Why The CS Tapered Are Not More Popular? The Sound Is So Deep , It Sounds Like A Much Bigger And More Powerful Enging To Me. I Guess Most Folks Want The Bling Of The Slash Cut. Not Me. I Once Was Asked Why I Still Had The Stock Exhaust On The Bike .funny Look After I Fired It Up.

The tapered sound better and deeper than the slash cuts...

In the photos/video forum, there is a video with the sound of the

Mine sounded deeper, but not louder. After a few thousand miles the carbon builds up inside and gets rid of that tinny sound and they get that nice deep sound

Sorgy also will talk bikes with you and not give you that 'Just buy parts from me you A**hole' attitude. My local HD shop must take pride in being insulting and arrogant. I wont put up with that itshay when guys like sorgy cut you a deal and spend the time to follow thru with the sale.

I also have the CS tapereds and can definately say I never heard anything even remotely "raspy" about their sound. I wonder why the slash cuts would sound so different?

All I know is I love my tapereds. EXACTLY the sound and volume(not too loud) I was looking for. On decel, they have a great "burbling" sound to them. I have also noticed after a few thousand miles thay have deepened and mellowed somewhat.

For $150.00, you can't go wrong unless you are looking for more of a bling factor visually like V&H or Samson.

No offense, but if they turned yellow its likely the symptom of a poorly tuned engine (too lean). A full length heat shield exhaust system will only hide the symptom. My advice would be to cure the problem. Cycle Shacks have an excellent reputation among the many riders who have bought them on this forum. Nothing wrong with V&H or rinehart, but if CS had a yellowing issue it would be a very hot topic here...like that POS SE air cleaner unit.:D

Was thinking of taking off my stock mufflers and installing my CS tapers. How much of the exhaust do I have to take apart to do this? It is suppose to be nice out today and don"t want to spend all day in the garage. Never had a Harley before and am looking in the manual and it looks like i must loosen the exhaust enough to seperate the muffler from the interconnect. Any easy tips would be great.:whisper

Tapered have a stock look, and the slash downs or slash cuts is more of a preference of looks than anything. They all have the same baffle .I would buy the ones you think look the best I did.

Hey All:

I recently put a set of CS drag pipes on my 2002 883r and was really happy with the sound. I had also purchased 12" silencers (baffles) when I purchased the pipes from J & P Cycles (www*jpcycles.com) (replace the asterisk with a period – the forum would not let me post links because I am too new ). These are the pipes in question (Item 441-014, www*jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=08f8c7c5-597f-4bed-a431-21743a3b7500) and these are the baffles in question (www*jpcycles.com/productdetail.aspx?PID=4410017). After having the pipes on with no baffles for a few days I decided I wanted to see what the baffles would sound like - if it would fatten up the sound any.

WELL...the baffles sound like crap!!!!!! It was at this point my current hell began! I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the baffles out. They were a bit stubborn going in and are now wedged in I guess - no screws or fasteners of any type. Does anyone out there have a trick for removing baffles from drag pipes? I have tried using a toggle bolt on a threaded rod to grip the inside of the baffles - no luck. I have tried jamming random objects in the back of the baffle (at this point the baffles well being is the least of my concern) - also no luck. The closest I got was with piece of copper tubing I smashed down and hammered to a hook type of shape, I thought I had it - then I managed to tare the copper pipe right in half. Also, I did spray WD40 in the pipes/baffles before each attempt to try to give it some lube. I also tried a bent coat hanger to try to catch one of the baffle thingies that sticks into the baffle, again no luck. All that happened with the coat hanger was I bent the baffle thingy. SO...if anyone has any great ideas, I am all ears!!!!

Thanks all,
Nicholas

Oh, also, I have considered just taking the pipes off and pounding the baffles out from that side, BUT I would like to avoid this if at all possible as I had issue with the studs when installing the pipes. Thanks again for any help you all can provide!

Try one of those dent pullers with the slide hammer on it. You can get a
cheap one at a tool store for about $15.

merc
6th May 2006, 23:01
hey Nick
here is a thought.. Get one of those wall screws that have a butterfly nut on the end. They fold and fit thru a hole. When on the opposite side it will spring open in back of the baffle. now you should be able to grap the screw head with something and rip it out. Maybe hook up that slide hammer that maddog mentioned-then pound it out from the rear with the puling hammer.

Take the pipes off, and stick a slightly smaller pipe in the inlet. Then smack it down on the small pipe like a post driver. Unless they are full drag pipes that is.

Hey All:

Thanks for all the replies! Lots of great ideas! I think it looks like I will be living in this forum for many years to come!

MadDog: Great idea, something similar to a suggestion from my dad, only problem is I have no way to hook the dent puller to the baffle. The only way I could securely attach the dent puller to the baffle would be to weld it to the baffle. I am however not willing to do this, as with the heat from welding I am fairly sure the pipe would be damaged or at the very least discolored. Also, I have a feeling the heat from welding might also warp the baffle to a degree I may never get it out. If I did have a way to hook the dent puller to the baffle without harming the pipe, your idea would be the first thing I would try. Thanks for the thought though.

Merc: I have already tried this idea. You an engineer? My dad is an aeronautical engineer and he was the one who suggested this idea to me first (this is what I meant by toggle bolt). The problem with this idea was that even after grinding the toggle/butterfly bolt part down many times, it still would not go past the can opener shaped triangles pointed into the baffle from all sides. Great idea though, thanks!

A45Junkie: Yep! I done beat it with everything I could find. I am quite lucky actually that I didn't destroy the pipes in the process. Thanks for the idea though.

SportysRock: They are in fact full drag pipes. Thanks though.

Well…thanks to everyone for all the great replies. I think I am just going to give in and take the pipes off today and pound the baffles out from the front side. Thanks again to all who tried to help.

Thanks again all,
Nicholas
