I added my manifold breather yesterday, removed the exhaust and replaced the headder gaskets.
When I started the bike,it started a little harder than usual, took longer to warm up to the point where it would idle, after warm up,on the road it pops back through the exhaust when I back out of the throttle to shift or slow down, the idle is also up higher than usual.
I had this problem before with a bad carb to manifold seal, replaced it and all was fine.
When I installed the kit the carb was drawn about 1/8-- 3/16 inch outward frrom the manifold.
Do you guys think that mabe I have a leak at the carb,or maby I have an exhaust leak allowing the engine to draw in cold air causing the prob.??
If the prob turns out to be the seal at the carb to manifold, how can it be fixed??Is the seal long enough that I can slip it enough to make it seal?
Opinions please.
Thanks,
Don

Sounds like the carb isn't seated properly in the intake
manifold. I would check to see if everthing is properly
lined back up so that it is seated good. Start the motor
and spray WD-40 at the intake manifold and if it sucks
the WD-40 in, the bike will bog down. Also the pipes may
not be properly torqued down which might cause
the popping effect also.
You may also have a leak thru one of the gaskets
between the AC and carb. Just need to go back
and double check and make sure everything is
properly lined up. :yikes

I guess I will start with the carb area first, the most likely place ,in my opinion.
I probably won't have time for it untill next weekend, just wanted to see if anyone agreed with me.I hate looking for problems.

" I added my manifold breather yesterday" - dumb qwuestion , did you block any of the little holes in the edge of the carby with the gasket supplied with the kit ?
I did and got exactly your symptoms.

I was verry careful to get the gaskets on correctly.
I went out after my last post and started the bike up and let it warm up,I then reached behing the carb and attempted to adjust the rubber gasket while it was running with no success,However I could tell by the change in the idel from different movements of the seal that that is probably my problem.
If all goes well I will be off Thurs, and Fri.for Christmas and I will check it closer,I will also check the position of the gasket.
Any other ideas?
One other question.
The bike had steel exhaust gaskets in it installed by the indy that did the overhaul of my engine, when I replaced them I used the asbestos gaskets from the Harley dealer.
Which of the two are the best?

I cut a gasket spacer out of cork impregnated rubber gasket material that I had at the house and added it to the gaskets between the ac backplate and the carb to make up the difference in spacing. I am sure other materials would work as well. It seemed that before the spacers, the manifold seal would be hit or miss.

That sounds like something worth trying, there is plenty of material avaliable at work.I will grab something up tomorrow and give it a try.
Thanks.
