I have an earlier version of the 418 on my FXD, main difference is it requires a spring compressor and tool to change preload. I have the 440s on my 1200R. At this point I believe the 440 is a considerably better shock. The ones on the FXD are still good but they don't have the compliance that the 440s do.
This is not a very fair comparison mind you because the shock angle of the FXD is quite different and of course the bike itself is quite diffferent but its all I can offer you.

I also have a 05 1200 custom and am interested in up-grading the shocks.
So far I have been interested in the 418's and would like to know if anyone has experience with these and what length would be the replacement for the stock shocks to keep the same height. Thanks.

What is the differance between the 412, 418, & 440? I know there is a big cost dif.

How do the Harley Lowered Shocks compare to the 412's?

I just upgraded to Progressive 418's for my '04 Custom. They are a big improvement over the stock shocks but the springs are stiff. I have the lightest springs available (75/120), but at my weight of 175 lbs, they still have very little sag at minimum preload. I had to dial up the rebound damping to avoid getting bounced out of the seat on big bumps. Overall, the ride is nice--more "sporty" than cushy--and no more bottoming out like the stock shocks.

I am certainly no expert on the differences but this is what seems to me tobe the main differences.
412 Steel body, preload adjustment only, no dampening adjustment.

418 Aluminum bodied, preload and rebound dampening adjustment. Rebuildable. Their website alludes to some internal differences that are supposedly advantageous.

440 Uses IAS system of dampening, supposedly self adjusts to road input. Claimed by Progressive to be their top of the line shock. Preload adjustment only, not supposed to need dampening adjustment because of IAS system. Limited lifetime warranty on shock and spring.

And of course there is the difference in costs which is considerable.
Another shock I looked at and found pretty impressive is the Racetech Caddies, which are more expensive even than the 440s but I've been pretty impressed with Racetech products. Couldn't find out much anecdotal experience of owners to draw from though so decided to stick with Progressive this time around.

i have the 11" heavy duty 412's and think they are fantastic.
and suit my riding style.

if i were a bit more sports oriented the 418's would be a better setup.
i do believe the progressive dont recomend the 440's in anything less than 12"

cheers
