Have you noticed that small bell on some people's bikes and wondered why it was there? It's more than just decoration - It has a specific function.

As we all know, life has many mysteries that have no apparent solutions, One of these is Evil Road Spirits. They are the little gremlins that live on your bike. They love to ride. They're also responsible for most of your bike's problems. Sometimes your turn signals refuse to work, or the battery goes dead, the clutch needs adjustment, or any of several hundred other things go wrong. These problems are caused by Evil Road Spirits.

Road Spirits can't live in the presence of a bell. They get trapped in the hollow of the bell. Among other things, their bearing is supersensitive. the constant ringing of the bell and the confined space drives them insane. They lose their grip and eventually fall to the roadway. (Have you ever wondered how potholes are formed?) The bell has served its purpose.

If you have picked up a bell of your own, the magic will work. But if your bell was given to you, the power has been doubled, and you know that somewhere you have a special friend helping to look after you.

So, if you have a friend that doesn't have a bell, why not give them one? It's a nice feeling for the recipient to know you personally cared. The bell, plus a good preventive maintenance program by the bike's owner, will help eliminate the Evil Road Spirits

There must be a dozen posts on the bell here at XLForum. Why do all the new guys think that this is breaking news? :doh:laugh:p

Not being superstitious, I prefer to rely on preventive maintenance and occasional human sacrifices to the gods.

I know a few people who use the Bell, and those who do swear by it. Personally, I prefer the bell that is attached to the button on my left handlebar - I find it to be slightly more effective (note: I said slightly!). Yeah, I get superstitious over some things, but I have more important things to worry about than my own safety.

I've had a bell since 2003.... I've had 3 fall off..... I didn't go long before someone gave me a new bell. I have to say, I feel weird (paranoid) riding without one.

You'll get used to it. Remember, the Sporty is (arguably) the most versatile Harley out there. With all the options and configurations available, combined with the number of people who own 'em, we're not gonna all agree on how everything should be. Hell, if everyone here agreed with what I said, I'd start badmouthing y'all, just to see if everyone agreed with that, too! :D

I've had a bell on my bike for a long time. When I found it missing, my wife gifted me another one that she made from her crafting supplies. It's more important to me than a store bought bell.:laugh

I always thought the left swingarm thing was for fallen rider bells there usually copper or something. There to remind you of former riders that have fallen and you polish them in rememberence or something along those lines. I don't remember exactly.

The Purpose of the Guardian® Bell

Many of us have heard the story about Evil Road Spirits. They are little gremlins that live on your bike. They love to ride, and they’re also responsible for most of your bike’s problems. Sometimes your turn signals refuse to work; your battery goes dead, the clutch needs adjustment, or any of several hundred things that can go wrong. These problems are caused by Evil Road Spirits.

Evil Road Spirits can’t live in the presence of the bell, because they get trapped in the hollow of the bell. Among other things, their hearing is supersensitive, so the constant ringing of the bell and the confined space drives them insane. They lose their grip and eventually fall to the roadway. Have you ever wondered how potholes are formed? The bell has served its purpose.

If you pick up a Guardian® Bell of your own, the magic will work, but if your bell is given to you, the power is doubled, and you know that somewhere you have a special friend helping to look after you.

So, if you have a friend who doesn’t have a bell, why not give them one? It’s a nice feeling for the recipient to know you care. The bell, plus a good preventive maintenance program by the bikes owner, will help eliminate Evil Road Spirits.

Polishing the Guardian® Bell

It has been a tradition among some of us for a long time to attach a brass bell to our left swing arm, to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone down riding.

It’s a small thing, but the reason a brass bell is chosen is that, as we ride, it gets dirty and tarnished. Every time we get down to wash and polish it, we are reminded of friends lost, and our thoughts turn to the meaning of being in the wind.

As we ride and hear the bell ring, we know that our brothers and sisters are riding with us, and how easy it would be to join them with a single mistake.

And maybe, just maybe, the next time a situation comes up; they will be there to help us...as long as we remember them by polishing the bell.

I got a few from donscyclewear.com and I keep them around to throw into packages when I sell/trade/give away MC parts.

I have one on my bike that Don gave me. Not much into the superstition, but I like that someone thought enough to send me one.

And to the OP, don't sweat the repost. I've been here for years and I don't read the old crap either!

I've never had one... only thing I've ever hung on my bike like that was a corn cob they were givin out on a charity run for the Shriners last year they said it was for luck.... yeah i blew a hole in one of my pistons about 300 miles in and about 75 miles from home... some luck that brought.
