View Full Version : 1000 mile service....
vetteguy 20th December 2004, 20:46 The bike I just bought has 990 miles on it. I see in order to keep the warranty intact I must have it serviced at a dealer. How much should I expect to pay for this? I also need to transfer the warranty over. If I fill out the card in the back of the book and send it in will they send me a warranty card? Thanks, Guy
Moved On 20th December 2004, 20:54 About $300 to $400 for a 1K.

SixMilesFromHell 20th December 2004, 20:57 Good question. I did not bother to ask and my dealer charged my $290 for the 1000-mile check up. Plus it took 4 hours. It was fun going home and telling my bride what I spent on an oil change. You can do the service yourself; you just need to save receipts to keep the warranty valid.
Turbota 20th December 2004, 20:58 I don't think Harley-Davidson can [legally] void your warranty just because you did the 1st service yourself, or had it completed at and independant cycle shop.
Turbota 20th December 2004, 21:03 Oh, your second question ... Harley does not give it's 04-05 owners warranty cards anymore like they used to. Now your just in the companies computor database.
Gone 20th December 2004, 21:05 You dont have to have Harley do ANY SERVICE -- they have marketed to you the concept that only they can service the motorcycle --- it is against the law it has been against the law since the Magnusson-Moss act in 1975 -- of course Bush may change that.

gamhill 20th December 2004, 21:09 I paid 200.00 for the 1K, not much more then oil and filter. One minor adjustment to the steering head.
There shouldn't be any cost to transfer the warranty, contact HD and they will send you a form to fill out and return. The old owner will need to sign this as well.
According to the warranty info I read, HD states that both the 1K and the 5K, needs to be done at a dealer. Not sure how legal this really is - IMHO as long as your can prove that the service was done, either by yourself or and indy, the MoCo would have to honor the warranty.
Gone 20th December 2004, 21:12 It is only legal if it is provided for free.

Phil R 20th December 2004, 21:25 My dealer includes the 1,000 service in the price of the bike.
toothygrin 20th December 2004, 21:39 I did the 5k myself. The procedures are outlined in the owners manual as far as adjusting the primary drive chain and changing the trans sport fluid and engine oil. Man that transmission cover didnt want to come off. I stripped two of the torx bolts trying to get them and had to go buy an impact screwdriver to get the last one off. Most of the service is check the condition of or lube etc.
Stephen Hawk 20th December 2004, 22:22 Warranty, you mean my Harley actually has a warranty? Damn, I thought I had to do all this stuff myself and warranties were extra............ Actually, if the bike has been altered Harley can deny a number of claims. I do all my own work and don't let anybody touch my bikes. The last people I'm taking my Harley to is a Harley service center as the ones near me have a very poor rap........

rstoll 21st December 2004, 00:22 I will do my own 1k service. Dealer wants $195. I think I can do it with Mobil 1 for about 30 bucks.

Your dealer is dirt cheap! Here in Phoenix, Arrowhead and Chandler H-D is getting over $300 for the 1,000 mile 1st service.
txsporty 21st December 2004, 00:38 Dealer did Mine for Free!!! :D 5,000 mile was $300.00!!! :yikes
lefty 21st December 2004, 00:58 IK first service at the stealer cost me $200.00. For those of you that are mechanically inclined (I used to be but age has removed that aptitude) this seems outrageous. It is steep, but my experience the last few years has been that when I f*#@ with things, in the end it winds up costing me more than it would have paying someone else to do it, eg., shooting not one but two finish nails through my hand working on wood work. . . .Sometimes for me the guessing the cost makes me crazy, at least I was told up front when I purchased my first and second HD what the service would cost. . .And finally, you paid for it "in the price of the bike." There's a dealer (real stealer) here in St. Louis, Gateway Harley, that wanted $21.5K for the same Fatboy I paid $17.6K for at Doc's HD. The come-on was free first year service, we'll fix anything that goes wrong (no sh*# Sherlock, it's called a warranty) and (whoopie) $2K of chrome/motorclothes/etc. of my choice. Doesn't add up. Just buy the bike not the bullsh@* and find out the service costs up front.

Shark Doctor 21st December 2004, 03:11 Interesting. My dealer did my 1,000 free and said that was H-D policy... I was so impressed that after they finished, I gave them back the bike and had them do the Stage 1, carb rejetting, and SEII. They did all, gave me 20% off on the hardware, and charged damned little for the labor.
:clap
FastFwd 21st December 2004, 07:45 I recommend that anyone with the mechanical ability to service their own cage to perform the HD sheduled maintenance on their own - AFTER getting their FM. If you can afford to have your services done by your dealer and want to, fine, but it is not required.
PS - Free is free...required or not. Take it, you paid for it.
neckball 21st December 2004, 15:09 $167.00. Included a warranty repair of leaky rocker boxes. I don't know what they did in addition to the oil change (drive belt adjustment?), must have been a carb adjustment but the bike has a noticieable increase in throttle response. I'll probably do the oil changes myself in the future but for me getting the 1k service at the dealer was worth it for the increase in performance and driveability.
vetteguy 21st December 2004, 21:51 There are two dealers in the area and I will probably call both and get a quote. Since I just bought the bike and it has 990 miles I will probably just let them take care of the 1000k service because I need to have it inspected also so I can get tags. After that I will probably handle most of the maintenance myself. Thanks for all of the replies. Guy
arby 21st December 2004, 23:29 My dealer was $99.00 for 1000 mile, $225.00 for 2500 mile and bend over for 5000 mile.

RedRider 22nd December 2004, 00:22 If you are mechanically inclined at all, and have a few hours to spare, I recommend doing the service yourself. Not difficult work at all. Plus, it will get you more familiar with your scoot which may help in the future.
tonydangerous 9th January 2005, 07:26 I have To say I was pretty :censor pissed off :cloudmad when I found out how much they
charged for the 1000 mile service. It's just plain ridiculous In my humble opinion. I called my local HD dealer and talked to a guy In The service shop
and He would not give Me A straight answer If It would void my warranty
If I had an independent guy To Do It!
I've changed the oil a couple of times on my cages so I just bought the
oil, filter, and wrenches and just Did It myself. I'm not even remotely close To bein' a mechanic but I had no problem changing the oil just following the owners manual. I highly recommend doing It yourself. That's comin' from a guy thats mechanicly retarded. :p
mountbkr 9th January 2005, 13:01 Mine was done for the cost of the fluid .
