*NS = Not Sportster
This is a picture of a buddy's grandparents from 1938. I'm guessing it's an Indian of sorts, but not sure. Any help here? All my friends ride sportbikes and don't have a clue.

Flathead engine. Pretty sure that's an HD springer front end. Indian used girders.
Flatty or Y2K will know the exact model type.

From the position of his hand on the right grip, I'd say it aint the throttle hand. I'm gonna SAY Indian. But notice the drive chain. It's on the left. Not a Scout, not a Harley flatty 45, maybe an 80'' ? Gonna keep diggin'

I don't think it's a single. It looks like another cylinder between his and her legs.

I'm looking at a 1936 VLH (side valve) in the Allen Girdler and Ron Hussey book that looks a lot like that bike. Same fork, headlight, bars, cylinder head, crash bar, floor boards, frame, stand (rear wheel) and (almost) fenders. It even has multiple caps on the tank like that bike.
I found a '34 VLH on Ebay via google that doesn't look at like that.
Here's one from google, but you can't see up too close:

One More from this site (http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Bike%20Directories/Harley%20Davidson%20Bikes/HD%20Index.htm):

I think Gary won the prize here,it's definately a BT Harley Flathead from the mid 30's. I would say prolly a VL allright. :geek

I reckon thats a 1932 VL.....riveted front guard ......right toolbox and horn placement. Correct tailight and stand hanger....
And the special homemade exhaust mods.........chop that stinken fishtail off ....

the I-beam front forks were used from 28-36 and the left side drive chain was a big twin feature , the tail light is pre 34 and the "V" model is post 29 so my best guess would be a 30-33 "v" or "vl" early 34 at the latest
does that help ya any ?
