spineshot 24th October 2007, 20:11 If i wanted to build a copy of Cal Rayborns XR that he raced in the early 70's,what kind of frame would i use? is it a modified sporty frame? better yet is there a website i could find specs for an XR TT Racer like would have been run at Indy?

Kent Richie is the owner of Airtech and is a good friend of one of the members here. He goes by Isiahstites on the forum and has the 82ci LSR bike you might have read about here.
Quebeker 24th October 2007, 21:48 Look here (http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/Harley/XR750TT1970-74.htm), about $1000 for COMPLETE glass bodywork. It's just a matter to make it fit to yours.

It's under vintage fairings.

83XLX 24th October 2007, 22:31 Well, to build a copy of Cal's bike, you need an XR750 engine and a factory roadracing frame for starters. The repro body work would be the easy part.....:doh
spineshot 25th October 2007, 16:24 I dont have the money for a reall XR engine and transmission,I do have a Buell motor and transmission from cousins Buell that he rolled 5 years ago,He's still very messed up,Broke 4 vertabrae, broke both femurs, all the fingers in his hands and forearms, and split his pelvis 3 and 1/2 inches,it nearly killed him but he's still riding none the less, anyways he and i want to build a copy of Cal's bike as closely as we can, with limited funds,we have the right carbs, handlebars, seat and 3 sporty frames, and one daytona style rear wheel with the sprocket and brakes,It wont be a 'real' daytona racer but i'd like it handle like one and appear as closely as it can to a daytona racer.I have to beat my brother, He's building a daytona style Triumph
gwcrim 25th October 2007, 16:50 One of your first challenges will be to mount a Buell engine in a Sportster frame. IIRC, the mounting systems are different. I think I'd start with a 5 speed solid mount frame though.
Do you intend to use drum brakes? If so, it can't be too hard to put an old iron head front end on a newer neck. Worst case you'll have to machine a new stem. They changed to 1" somewhere along the way. There may be bearings that will adapt though.
For the exhaust look at Jegs.com for J bend exhaust pipe sections and bust out your welder.
As stated earlier, Airtech makes lots of repop 'glass parts. Ebay is a good source too. It can be lots cheaper. But unfortunately, sometimes you get what you pay for.
gwcrim 25th October 2007, 16:52 Here's what I came up with by constantly watching Sportster.org swap pages and Ebay.

thefrenchowl 25th October 2007, 21:58 Hi All,
The Cal rayborn's 1973 Alloy XRTT was in the Daytona 2006 auction!!! Sold for $160 000...
Blue prints for KR/Iron XRTT/Alloy XRTT (they are all slightly different...) are around and I've seen replica frames on eBay...
For race swing arms, you can't go wrong if you go to my friend Jim Haubert in Arizona, ex-race shop machinist and ex sub-contractor for all bikes prototypes at H-D from 1973 till 1981:

spineshot 27th October 2007, 18:59 i can see already this is not going to be easy or cheap,The only reason i'm using the Buell drive train is because it's free, and only has 2,900 miles on it,it's got more 'cubic inches than my brothers Triumph (but he dont need to know that,And he couldnt tell a Harley 1200 from the V-Rod engine)I have 3 frames i can use,1 i know is a 68 sporty frame, the other i think is the same but somehow modified,And the last one is a hacked over Abortion called a 'chopper attempt', I dont know what i can do with that,I'll use some small parts maybe. As i go I will try and post pics in here,
spineshot 22nd January 2008, 04:24 So much for the 'Cal Rayborn Repro Racer'! I sold the Buell motor and the remains of parts my cousin decided he wanted use for a Rat bike I think thats going to be easier and more fun to do than the racer anyhow
