View Full Version : Rain Gear? sleezyrider 17th July 2005, 23:41 what do ya'll use? and comments why GSB_77_XL 17th July 2005, 23:50 I have it in my saddle bags but dont use it unless I am headed to work dabronco 18th July 2005, 00:36 I used to carry three hefty bags in my tool kit as emergency rain gear. Cut three holes in one fer a pancho, and the other two on my legs with bungees wrapped around them fer waders. They take up very little space. Where I come from, riding season rain storms could be easily waited out. Here if it rains, I stop and wait it out, period! It rains so seldom that the road never gets washed of oil, antifreeze and tire rubber. When it DOES rain, it is slipperier than my ex-wife's lawyer. I once counted six rear end collisions in the eight miles of boulevard between my job and home. I would only ride on these 'really f^%king slippery when wet' roads, if everybody else went home first! Sandman883 18th July 2005, 00:37 I have an inexpensive rainsuit from Nelson Rigg. It was $49 for a vinyl rain jacket and pants. The jacket has full length zipper with overlying flap with velcro closure the full length of the zipper, 2 outer pockets over the chest with velcro closures, and pull out hood which stores in the collar. Pants have 2 cargo pockets with velcro closures. This thing is waterproof, I stay bone dry in it. However, it is also very HOT in the summertime! Actually I only wear it if I'm on my way to work and it's raining, as my work cloths (scrubs) have to stay dry. I find it better to just get wet rather than suffer from the heat of wearing it. The rain feels good on hot days, and then you just air dry after riding awhile. :) All in all the Nelson Rigg rain gear is a great suit, does it job when needed, and it is inexpensive. Also, on rain days I wear a full face instead of my half helmet...and of course good waterproof boots. jlcrss 18th July 2005, 01:07 I wear my Sterns fishing rain suit if I really have to. RedRider 18th July 2005, 01:16 Just wore mine again today- it's been a while since I had it on. I got it at a local leather shop. It's their in-store brand, jacket with matching pants. Nice high collar and elastic waist on the jacket to prevent ballooning at speed. I think it was around $65. Money well spent for me. I keep it in my backpack at all times- it's always there if I need it. IronMick 18th July 2005, 01:18 I have the Road Iron brand from the HD shop. Black with the big orange stripe across. Looks very good. Easily seen. And everyone knows what brand you are riding too, eh. dabronco 18th July 2005, 02:07 Gawd I must really be a cheap ass! bubbahog 18th July 2005, 02:23 I got a cheap $8 set from Academy. Never used it, but it's in the bags, just in case. Wish I'd gotten yellow, though. Gary 18th July 2005, 04:26 I have a $25 set (jacket and pants) that I got from the local sporting goods store. It also has a nice carrying case, which help keep the dust off it while it's sitting on the shelf in the barn ;) Gazza crackers 18th July 2005, 04:31 full length stockmans coat. leather chaps for slight drizzle, dri-rider overpants for anything more. cheers crackers Confused89 18th July 2005, 04:40 I went out riding today with a friend and I knew it was going to rain because it had been raining on and off for the past week. It was sunny when I left and raining when I got back. I don't have any real rain riding gear. Just a T-shirt, jeans, Justin boots, and a full face that I wear all of the time. I had two riding jackets for cooler weather and they are both water proof but when I wear them it is usaully to cold to be riding in the rain. TomW 18th July 2005, 17:23 You didn't say what type of weather you might get cuaght in. I am from Michigan and use to wear some in expensive vinyl stuff you could get at the sporting goods store. Problem was they don't breath very well, and in cold rains won't keep you warm. As a result I did a bit of research and found that First Gears stuff is well made and works quite well. I have their yellow Rainman Jacket which is $75. its a made of .18 mm 70 denier nylon w/full nylon slip lining. Has dual storm closure pockets, and integrated stuff sack, adjustable webbing belt and 3M™ Scotchlite™ reflective logo and piping. They also have slip over pants made out of the same material for $54 available only in Black. http://www.firstgear-usa.com/products_raingear.htm#rainman I didn't buy these pants particular pants instead opting for their HT Overpants. These are a lot more durable, and have hip, and knee pads as well as a zip out liner for those especially cold mornings late in the riding season here in Michigan. Here is a link to more information. http://www.firstgear-usa.com/prod_pants_ht.htm These are a bit warm in the summer heat though, but I think they provide a lot more protection should you, god forbid, skid out in the rain. I have been caught in VERY heavy down pours in this setup and with the exception of my hands I was dry as a bone. I might add that I also ride with a full face helmet. Since I don't have bags on my Sporty yet. I can carry this stuff easily in a backpack. The pants are easy to get into as they have full velcro and zippers all the way from hip to ankle, and fit over your cloths. Black with the big orange stripe across. Looks very good. Easily seen. And everyone knows what brand you are riding too, eh. Same for me. Came in handy on the Great Lakes ride when we got caught in a torrential downpour for quite a distance. Never got wet, never got too soaked from humidity, full face hemet shed water nicely, but the boots - supposedly waterproof - didn't work at all well... Very wet/cold feet. Interestingly, my H-D hard-sided saddlebags didn't ship a drop of water! cantolina 18th July 2005, 21:16 Full Face Shield... that's all....nothing more... A. I like to travel light B. Just haven't gotten around to a GOOD set of rain gear I wanted to spend money on yet....has to do a dual role for me...wet OR cold.. C. Rain is fun! Sportster Girl 18th July 2005, 21:47 Full Face Shield... that's all....nothing more... that's my number one item now. nothing else like it. i have a bitchin' browning gore tex top/bottom hunting suit that they bought for us to use at work. anytime i take a long trip it goes along. i wore it during a hard downpour riding home a couple of weekends ago and i was completely dry except for my boots. otherwise, around town, nothing but the full face helmet. Shark Doctor 18th July 2005, 21:48 nothing but the full face helmet. Being that I leave for Sturgis (1800 miles each way) I am looking for a new rainsuit since there is nothing worse than being days away from home and soaking wet. I am seriously looking into the Tourmaster Elite Jacket $49.99 and the Tour Master Elite Rain Pants w/Nomex. I especially like the Nomax on the pant legs since I burnt my current rain pants on my exhaust this morning riding to work and the nomex should prevent this. I hate to spend $100 but I got allot of use out of my last rain suit and it lasted me 10 years. http://www.denniskirk.com/denniskirk/b2c/product_images/e/3/5/300pix/e353821xs.jpg http://www.denniskirk.com/denniskirk/b2c/product_images/e/3/5/300pix/e353818xs.jpg If you are the type of rider who only goes out when the sky is blue and the forecast is for good weather then I think a cheapo rain suit is fine. However I never check the weather forecast. My philosophy in the summer is if it's not raining when I am ready to leave for work I usually ride. Occasionally I will even ride in when it is raining. Dude, where did they find this guy to model the rainsuit, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy? :doh:roflblack:dunno Danny3nose 19th July 2005, 01:32 I'm with Iron Mick, got the same suit after riding home from Windsor to Cleveland in 3 1/2 of rain w/no rain gear, on the highway in the middle of the night. Had a passenger and our cargo on the rack, they both got COMPLETELY soaked. Now I have a hiker's backpack raincover that fits over my TBag and keeps it perfectly dry. Sportster Girl 19th July 2005, 02:25 i'd like to see that. got pics of you in nothing but the helmet? :p geeez, you really gotta watch what you say around here..... :smoke Jesse_Bolt 19th July 2005, 04:14 Frogg Toggs (http://216.69.177.125/home.asp) Purchased the camouflage bibs from one of the venders at Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson during the Spring Rally for $35.00. http://216.69.177.125/Separates/DN811_2.jpg JB blueglide88 19th July 2005, 04:20 I've had a few Harley rainsuits, and a Dry Rider one piece. If you touch the motor break out duct tape cause they burn faster than your paycheck @ the Stealers! Greywolf 13th August 2005, 18:30 Got a Nelson Rigg from JC Whitney only $20 never used it but rode in the rain plenty of times with it sitting at home. 66impala 18th August 2005, 02:06 After this 1st year of riding ive been in about 5 rain storms, rode 300 miles on I95 from myrtle beach without good gear. After having blue hands for about 4days from HD gloves ink running. Riding for 8hrs in a steady rain sucks. I broke down and bought a 1 piece nelson rigg suit, HD rain gloves from ebay, a pair of boots from cabellas that my work paid for. The one piece suit works great but is very warm. 05bluesportster 3rd September 2005, 19:43 Just stumbled on this Rainsuit (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=11629&department=161&division=1). No idea of the quality but you can buy it in Harley Colors. These are probably one of the nicer ones that I have seen. SteveK 8th October 2005, 03:19 Anyone know of manufactures of rainsuit in taller sizes? wabiker 8th October 2005, 05:25 ......Leathers and liberal application of Lexol Bikerdude 10th October 2005, 04:27 ......Leathers and liberal application of Lexol(is that why the Captain Morgan didn't help so much??):smoke wabiker 10th October 2005, 05:02 ......Nah.......Nothing but Gentleman Jack here.. :-) Jeffytune 10th October 2005, 06:10 I have a Harley Rain suit, and it is in my saddle bag right now. Why do I have them, I LINE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. Hell, It was 49*f this morning and drizzly, I put on the leathers, and well, i had the suit with me, but they said it would clear by afternoon, just a couple sprinkles here and there, nice day for a ride here. You see, here, if you only ride on clear no chance of rain days, you will ride about 80-90 days a year If you not willing to ride with a chance of rain, your going to miss a lot of good riding days. Kev M 10th October 2005, 16:01 I don't use rain gear anymore... well, usually I don't. I've been wearing aerostich gear for over a decade and therefore don't need it. However, through the summer months I tend to not wear the stich riding pants, so I DO keep an old pair of rainpants on the bike and wind up using em maybe once or twice a year. K thereisnospoon 13th October 2005, 22:41 I have a river road high-n-dry on order. looks pretty good. got stuck in the rain again (for the last time, again) and have to do something about it. :cloudmad thatbikerguy 13th October 2005, 22:54 I've got the HD $100 special.... Carl-04XL 15th October 2005, 21:16 geeez, you really gotta watch what you say around here..... :smoke Well, a picture is worth a thousand words... :roflblack :roflblack :roflblack ... and with just a full face helmet on, who's to know who is in the helmet (assuming dark tinted shield :laugh :laugh :laugh ) |
