Just saying hello from Connecticut. Just purchased my second bike and first Harley, a 2004 XL 1200r. It certainly is a great improvement over the rusty 81 Kz 305 i was riding before. Looks like this will be a great resource as I get to know the new bike.

A buddy bought a screamin eagle street tuner and we tuned his street glide (basically downloaded a map).

Aside this thing being a POS and a rip off in my mind from Harley (nothing at all like the screamin eagle pro race tuner) i noticed that the initial software version included maps for the various years of sportster.

For my model, all were basically the 176FM005 map. Howwever, the software did a "connect to internet" and then downloaded a new version of the street tuner software.

In the files section, there were two directories for sporty. one called "sportster" and the other directory called "xl".... ok....wierd number 1

now, what has happened is ALL the sportster maps have disappeared. Wierd. Is this thing orignally designed for XL but for what ever reason they decided not to continue support for sportster. Wierd number 2.

Just curious if anyone knows the back story on this gizmo. It is not flexible at all..basically does not even allow adjusting AFR or VE's for the sportster, about worthless other than downloading from stock to slightly improved (stock harley) map.

The files between the SEST and the SEPRT/SERT are not compatible either...file extensions are different etc.

Anyway, it was not mine...it was a buddies..and he was happy with his FLHX remap so good enough for me....

just curious.... that's all.

Also am looking for a set of VE tables for 1200 xl with air and race pipes. Anyone have a powervision map that's been put into their PC software and can show me how your VE's look for front and rear?

thanks.

So I have removed my heads and jugs from My 74. Its seems Every time I Dig a Little deeper I get a Few more answers, and of course Questions. So here is what I Know So far.
I have put a 1.4 kw starter in, And it still locks up under the compression stoke. Burnt out 3 solenoids.
The Flywheel Is a S&S 4 13/16 Stoke
Pistons are S&S forged .060 over
The Heads have been Ported/polished. The guy I deal with specialized in old Harley Engines and said who ever did it knew what they were doing.
The Jugs look good as do the piston But you can see some shiny spots where the head bolts go. He says this is common for this to occur being .060 over.
The connecting Rods are S&S 1000f, And there was a .025 stoker plate at the bottom of each jug.
Now the Questions
1. Any one know what the compression ration would be with this set up.
2. I have enough room for another .040 stoker plate width if I do that would it drop my compression enough to allow my starter to start the bloody thing with out seriously downgrading the performance.
3 Since the heads are off im going to get compression release valves put in at a cost of about 400. Is it worth it and has anyone done this before.
4 If im going to purchase new pistons and jugs what ones are made to last

I made my windscreen from a Memphis Shades Del Rey windshield a few years back. Every now and again I get asked how I did it and what was involved. Here's what it looks like:

Well, I decided it was time to make a second windscreen. I figured I would take a few pictures along the way. I have no idea what I'm doing, but perhaps it'll help someone else looking to do something similar.

This time I'm going for a slightly larger size. I'm starting with Memphis Shades Del Rio windshield. My first step is to use a dry erase marker to come up with a line I like. It took several tries to get one I liked:

The dry erase is great because you can simply erase it and start over or adjust as necessary. However, it I outline it with a sharpie once I have the line finalized:

Then I use masking tape to protect the lower portion of the screen. I go right up to the line:

Then it's time to cut!! I use a jig saw with a metal blade. I'm sure there's a better solution. In the past I've used a handsaw, and it works just as well.

The one problem with the highspeed jig saw is it melts the plastic as it cuts it. So, once cut it rebonds to itself.

I just snap the cut piece off. Using a handsaw prevents this. But whatever works.

You'll notice the cut is a bit rough and so I start by knocking off the "slag" with a rasp file.

I also hit high spots with the file:

I'm not so worried about making the edge smooth at this point, but rather getting the shape right. Next I switch to a coarse sandpaper:

This is the edge that the coarse sandpaper leaves:

Next I cleaned everything off. Used a bit of solvent to remove the sharpie and any left over tape residue.

This is what the edge looks like all cleaned at this point:

I decided to try something at this point...

I used a MAPP torch, but propane would work as well. Just keep the heat moving. You are just melting the very edge. It doesn't take much heat at all.

This is how it turned out:

(to compare I'm holding the stock finished edge I cut off...it's not polished at all as you can see)

Honestly, the picture looks worse than it did in person. It really didn't look bad at all at this point. But, I decided I would try smoothing it a bit with finer sandpaper:

That resulted in a smoother appearance (trust me it looked better in person):

And after hitting it with the torch:

It's not perfect, but it'll do. You can keep smoothing it if you want. But, eventually I'll paint the backside and the edges, so it won't matter. However, if I wasn't going to paint it the way the edge looks now it's at least as good as the factory edge is.

I would be painting it right now...but it's pouring down rain. So, that will have to wait a day or two.

I pushed the bike home, and found that the wire from the battery to the starter somehow made its way to the side of the jug and melted through the plastic to the wire... so obviously it shorted but I get no power. well I just put the key in the red lights on the "visor" come on not real bright but I push the start button and doesnt even try to start, no horn or anything. There is a fuse from the battery under the seat. The battery reads 10.53 volts..... Please any suggestions... the damn thing was running pretty good, and now its nothing.... I just picked it up Friday and fixed some of the major problems, now I believe I have more major problems than I began with......

I was at my Local Dealership today and there was an issue with a customers bike. My BIL(future) was on the phone with tech services. Brembo is only shipping.completed calipers.. And they come pre-filled with fluid. They only needed an O-ring.. They even called Brembo tech services..

So if you have a Brembo brake system (from a H-D) do not take it apart as there are no service parts.

As I was leaving they were talking to a vendor who sells chrome Brembo Calipers to find out where they get parts....

So keeping fingers crossed...

I had to take the heads off to get a broken exhaust stud out. I am now trying to put everything back together. When trying to put the rocker boxes back on, one wouldn't sit flush with the head. I found that one of the pushrods is sticking up about 1/8" too far, so the rocker is resting on it and the rocker on the other side doesn't touch that pushrod. I looked inside and there doesn't appear to be anything in the hole. I tried lightly tapping the pushrod to get it to sit in properly, no dice. The other rocker box is great and fits like a glove.

Can anyone provide any suggestions? I am very new to this, so I definitely want to make sure this is put back together correctly.
I bought a 1997 Honda 250 then I did the MSF course last summer. 6/22/12
Rode it all summer and well into the winter. but was wanting something more.

I just purchased a brand new 883Low 2012 had 100 miles on it. After a 35 year hiatus from riding this is my 3rd bike. Long story short my daughter purchased the bike took the ABATE class. She did well and completed the course. Dumped the bike the first day..Now scared to death to ride. She had been trying to get me to buy the 883 but I did not want it. She made me a deal I could NOT refuse. So this was as much a family decision as it was a " I want another bike" I had my heart set on a Heritage Soft tail. But I'm riding the 883 and lovin it! What a great bike.
I'm sure many of you have children that you have had to help out. So you know how I feel about this.. It's all working out. I'm on my 3r Mod already.:laugh
:D
