Cracked sprocket cover - is this common?
The sprocket cover on my '91 is cracking around the footpeg mounting hole. It hasn't broken quite yet, which is good, 'cuz I really don't want my peg and brake pedal falling off while I'm riding...
Good news is that the dealer says a new one is still available, and it's only $61.00.
Is this a common problem? Parts man noted that it's been updated, as it's now a -91A part number. Hopefully it's an improved design.
Last concern is that I was planning on cutting a sprocket cover down for my hardtail project, and I'm wondering it that will weaken the cover further? Anybody have any input on this one?

A friend of mine had the same problem, if you get it welded before it breaks off then it will be an easy repair.

They crack there when you drop them on the right side or bash the right peg hard against something, and they also crack there if you don't have the stiffener installed behind the master cylinder. Other than that, they don't really break.

I've broken two of them. So I'd say it can be pretty common.

i inherited the same problem on a 99 1200 and it is an actual break of both the sprocket cover AND the brace. So I guess a hard drop is in the bikes history.
in my case, the peg can wiggle around but when pressure is placed it seems to seat itself in a stable position so I am not in a panic yet. i will fix it very soon.
my question: is the fix as simple as replacing the cover and brace?
