Default Hïgh and Mïgh†y

Photos taken at the 2005 CEMA (Chrysler Employee Motorsport Association) car show held on the grounds of the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

This car is a replica of the famous C/Altered drag race car High and Mighty, campaigned in 1959 by the car club and racing team the Ram Chargers. In those days "Ram Chargers" was two words, later changed to "Ramchargers", and was originally comprised of Chrysler engineers, including Tom Hoover, "the father of the Hemi". Later, Elton "Al" Eckstrand, joined the group.

The High and Mighty (I and II) is documented as being a 1949 Plymouth Business Coupe. This body style was chosen by the Ram Chargers to maximize the possible weight transfer advantages. The car looks to me like a 1950 grille and tail lights, but I cannot verify the origins of these differences from a standard 1949 Plymouth.

The High & Mighty - II is a CEMA Club Project Car and was built to as closely replicate the original as possible. It is one of the earliest attempts at attaining more traction through weight transfer, hence the car is very high with altered suspension. It is also an early attempt at "tunnel ram" intake manifolds on the 392 CID Chrysler FirePower Hemi engine.

Looks like something outta MAD MAX!!! And look at the size of that engine! Ahhh....the good old days....when horsepower = cubic inches! It is seriously funny to me today when I see kids driving around in these rice 4 banger cars with the huge tail pipes on 'em, and they sound like souped-up sewing machines....if only they knew how silly they look!

Jesse- - -

Let me think back, and correct me if I'm wrong - Plymouth didn't offer the hemi in the fifty's version, did it?

The engine was offered in Chryslers as the Firepower, in DeSotos (how many folks remember that name) as the Firedome, and was it offered in Dodges as the Red Ram ?
