Sporty value? Need input.
Hello all. I've got a 1989 XLH1200 with approx 27K miles. I'm about to put it up for sale but was curious to what the true HD guros on this site think when it comes to list price. So to hell with any Blue Book values and so on. What do you guys think?
The engine runs strong and fires up the first time... EVERY TIME. The paint/body is in about 85-90% shape. It rides smooth and straight. No rust, clean title, has removable leather bags, 14" apes (with spare stock bars off my 2011 Iron included), new battery cover, new module cover, new clutch cable, good wheels/tires, good clutch, SE AC and pipes, SE fork brace, Accel wires, engine guard, no leaks, ect....
All in all, its a really nice bike. The only real flaw is that the finish on the engine and forks look pretty aged, and a TINY "ding" on the gas tank (took me about a week of owning it to notice). And, the lens is missing from the speedo, but EVERYTHING works fine.
I know this thread is worthless without pics, I'll post some soon. Just wanted to know what you guys would either list this for vs. actually pay for this.
Thanks in advance guys.

A lot of it depends on which area of the country your in. I assume your in the United States? I'm also assuming that it was a 1200 stock from the factory. I'd ask $3,000 while hoping to get $2500.00. I don't think you could expect more than that.
Mileage really doesn't mean anything on a bike that old. No one in their right mind is going to believe that a bike that is a quarter of a century old only has 27,000 miles on it. Hell that's just barely over a thousand miles a year.

Your bike is only worth what the market will bear. With today's economy being so poor and with people hurting for money, many bikes are being sold for less that what they're really worth. If you have the luxury of time on your side, always start high, at maybe $3,500 and wait til someone makes you an offer. If you're lucky, you'll get your asking price. If not, you can slowly drop your prices until you reach what someone will be wiling to pay for it. Good luck.
Wes.

An old POS IH's are going for over 5k in my area..
So yeah it depends on what part of the country you live in..Those earlier evo's are getting 3-4 k, but actually selling them is a different ballgame..

I do believe it only has 27K on the ticker... previous owner bought it from his father who had it garaged for about 5 years and neither of them rode it much.
Yeah I live in South GA, right on the FL line and theres a lot of bikes (HDs)around this area. I appreciate all the inputs.

I just had to let a 2007 XL 883 that was really nice go for $3,200 to a local broker, that's the same price it got up to on Fleabay and we had made the deal earlier and he reluctantly honored it. Its a really sucky market out there. I'm moving to Costa Rica and it cost so much to import it that I just had to let it go or I wouldn't have....

You may very well be right but, it doesn't really matter. Perception is what matters. Mileage doesn't really mean that much on these bikes. Very low mileage can be as bad as very high mileage. Sitting around for a few years is not good for a bike.
But, you really need to look at prices in your area. They can vary widely.
