Default Whats the difference?

Ive tried searching online for the answer and really cant find the same answer twice, whats the difference between a XLH1200 and a XL1200? Is there one or is it just a difference in time period?

My bikes fork label shows it as a XLH1200, the title shows as an XL1200.

Of what Ive read, this is normal with HD, but Im just curious what, if anything I could learn about my bike by deciphering the letter nomenclature.

Go to the Harley web site, under Parts, select 1995 and you'll see all Sportys have a XLH prefix. http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...d.hd!7005!8005

Title probably should read XLH1200, but it's not a material error. XL is the basic model line. The XL has been followed by a variety of suffixes over the years. XLH, XLCH, XLR, XLS, etc.

After looking through the parts years in the link above, just seems they decided to drop the H around 03. Hmm. A big whooptido I guess. Mystery solved.

I thought the "H" meant "Hugger" which is lower to the ground. Mine is also a 95 1200 XLH. Or used to be...

In the 80's EVO's, the H was high performance. But..... the regular 883's were H's too.....

In the beginning, there was the XLH, then a year later, the XLCH. The "Sportster H", as it was called, was a road model with battery ignition, larger tank and fenders. Then along came the "Sportster CH" with smaller tank and fenders and magneto ignition intended for sport and competition. That pretty much stayed the same until the electric starter came along, at which time the electric start models carried the XLH label and the kick only models retaining the XLCH label. After that, it really doesn't matter because there hasn't been any real Sportsters built since the late 60's.
