Any ideas what's going on

Sure, what is going on is that you are iving us nothing to work with. You will need to explain the issue in much greater detail to get any decent answers.

At this point it sounds like you have a piston outside of the engine and strapped a spark plug to it to see if it will arc?

Huh, I sure as h*ll would like to see a video of this. How do you know that your plug is arcing off your piston. Pretty hard to see what's going on in there with it all buttoned up.
