I mended the computer yesterday. I suppose that vacuuming out eight years of dust that had accumulated in the CPU heat-sink also helped a bit.

I learnt that I didn't really mend it properly - but just long enough for a full back-up to an external hard drive. *phew*

I've now got a shiny new lap-top..... and WOW, it's so much better.
