Default Running Bad

Hello everyone!
I have discussed this bike before, it's a 2001 1200XLH If I take the bike on say a 15 mile trip and stop. After restarting the bike it seems to spit and sputter and cough real bad. The last time when I thought I found the problem I had a vacuum line leaking going to the petcock. The carb has been rebuilt and jetted to the best of my ability. It's almost like when the bike gets hot it really acts up. The first time some one said about battery leads or flooding. Or possibly air intake leaks. Any ideas befor I take it to the Stealer ship, because at this point I am just scratching my head.

I had problem with choke not seating if bike was even slightly warm. Could cold start with no problem by pulling choke, starting, no throttle, within 10 seconds push choke in, then use throttle lock to let engine warm. Fun right? On restarts one twist of throttle no choke and it would start no problem. If I tried choke r twisted throttle more than once, I would have fuel everywhere. Changed entire choke assembly and no problem since. Maybe when pulling choke ur flooding it cause it's not seating back properly. Hope this helps.

You might be onto something. I have been spoiled with my other bikes that have injection. I have been thinking hard about getting the S&S super E carb kit. Any suggestions or dislikes about this.

I'm running cv 40 jetted, I see a lot of guys running Mikuni HSR42, in dyno section. I'm running 94 hp, Cf STD so that puts me about 90 hp SAE. Have had no other issues with cv besides choke. Check out intake and exhaust thread.

Well I think maybe (just maybe) I have finally found my problem. FYI= I took my bike for a ride the other day and the same old thing. Runs good then started popping & coughing and then ran good again. Then it just shut off. Finally got it restarted by moving the wires around on the coil. But It was also low on gas. I got the bike home and put gas in it and decided to take a closer look at the coil and in doing so found the the wire was broke in one of the rubber connectors. repaired it and took it for a ride, and not one cough or miss. I sure hope this is it because this is the best this bike has ever run.

A good reminder that the old saying, "Most carb problems are electrical problems." still holds true.

This one had me baffled. I have always been fairly good at rebuilding and tuning carbs. But this thing just gave me a fit with the electrical problem. I lost a lot of confidence in my carb skills until I found the electrical problem.
Thanks again everyone for the help!!!
