The broken belts I have seen always broke straight across and when they do that it's not possible for them to do anything except just drop out of the way in my opinion. I never heard of one shreading lengthwise, but that could be a problem if it does.

A belt that shreds lengthwise is caused by the pulleys not running straight and true , when I put a Super Max belt drive kit on my 82 . Nikki

You actually had one shred lengthwise? Did it flap where your leg would have been in the danger zone?

No on legs being in the danger zone as I modified the stock chain guard and kept the little piece that attach's to the swing arm as the fibers shredded out the side . I recommend not choping the front pully cover and keeping the beltguard on to keep your leg safe. Nikki

I guess my leg will be toasted if that ever happens, cuz I run no guards at all.

Saddlebags offer some protection if you have those.

I have nothing extra on my bike at all. If it will still run and stop with parts removed, then parts get removed. Oh, that's a lie, I have a sissy bar and passenger pegs for the old lady. But if those weren't there, she would make sure it didn't run, so I guess it's not a lie after all...

This winter I am going for a full strip down to powder coat the frame on my 04 XL1200R. Will also replace front and rear tyres at the same time, one item I need to consider is the tensioning of the rear drive belt? Any tips, at the moment I do not have the special tool as recommended by HD in their manual but may purchase it if there is not an XLF alternative method.

After mine broke I started checking belt tension on every sporty I ran across, and most of them were looser than mine by quite a bit, so I loosened it. I am not using the factory spec, I have that 1/2" to 3/4" play, but with no tension on it (free play). I think this is less likely to stress the belt over time, but I need to see if this new belt goes past 40,000 miles (which is where the last one broke about).

Buddy of mine got well over 100K miles on his FXR before he changed the belt. Claims everyone's belt is too tight. Even if the HD shop adjusts it.
