Speedo/tach quits on Bumps
'05 1200R
Speedometer and Tachometer works fine until I hit a bump then quits until I hit another bump it comes back on. Also Neutral light goes out, same time!
Plug under tank looks good, clean and greased. What else can I check?
Don't think it's electrical, disconnect when I hit a bump, just don't know where!
Any reply appreciated, Thanks

Check the ground point on the back of the primary casing.

Hi Folkie,
I've checked all connections that are easy to get to including the Battery terminals and all the fuses etc around there. I did find the battery posts were a little loose. I also found a little inline fuse in my battery tender cable that was a little corroded but I don't think that would cause anything except with the tender itself.
I do have a double ground on the battery. It goes from the battery to top/rear of the primary where the top starter bolt goes, then over to the rear of the case where it normally goes. Don't know for sure if that helps much but can't hurt. All those connections are good to go.
I hope I don't have to tear apart the speedo/tach heads looking for a bad conn.
I can't really test to see if I done any good except by riding, so I'll have to wait until then, to see if I did anything worthwhile.
I'm in the middle of putting a clutch helper on it (MullerPowerClutch), to make clutching a little easier on my old arthritic knuckles. Waiting for chrome primary bolts in the mail. Also putting an "AN Big Sucker" on it to help out my V&H Straightshots.
Thanks for posting so quick. Appreciate the help.

I just mentioned the ground on the back of the primary because I found when fitting a tach that if the nut on that stud isn't tightened properly ( ) it can make the speedo behave eratically.
Good luck with solving it.

Folkie,
I didn't add a tack. It's the stock speedo/tach on a '05 Roadster.
I think/hope that the loose battery cables might be the culprit. Won't know until I get it back up and running
Thanks!

Yes, I know that; I'm just saying how I came to discover that that particular ground being loose causes the speedo to crap out.

Mine was kind of doing this, tracked it down to a short under the tank where the hot wire for both was connected in a 3 way Y. With the bike ignation turned on, I started wiggling wires is how I found it. Took the Y apart Solders all 3 together and good to go.

Hey mid30, thanks for chiming in.
I got my clutch and Big Sucker together today and it's running fine. Haven't rode yet. Expecting thunderstorms all day.
I tightened all battery stuff and checked all sorts of connections and the tach didn't register anything so I assumed the speedo isn't doing anything either.
So, where exactly is this "Y" you speak of. I had the tank elevated and checked everything under there and It all seemed ok.
I'd like to find this "Y" and check it out.

It is under the tank, you will have to take the tank off to realy get to it. I would say it is about midway point if the the tank is on the bike. The stock splice is kind of strange. about 1/4 inch around and about an inch long, one wire on one end and 2 on the other headed toward the speedo and tach. It is located in the main harnes so you will have to split the rubber that covers all the wires. I should of taken pics of it when I did it but didn't think of it till I had it all buttend up. Sorry
