on my 80 with a 34mm carb I'm running a 65 with a 165 main, tried a larger pilot jet and it was doing the same as yours is.

I've got a 75 in mine. With that I set my pilot screw at between 3/4 and 7/8. If you turn it more than a full turn out you need a bigger slow jet. 75 is what works in mine.

I put a 75 in last night and mix was 2 1/4 out. Thats why i went with 80 sounded good at 3/4 out. But think i cooked plugs. When i get home from work going to slap in new plugs and hop on and see what hsppens. Cant believe how hard this has been to jet., what main are running?

If that is a 34mm Keihin carb then something is wrong, or your pilot setting technique is incorrect. Have you dismantled/cleaned/inspected the carb? Post some pics of the carb [top, front, sides] so we can verify what it is. Measure the venturi at its most narrow point - cut two pieces of cereal box cardboard one 34mm the other 38mm and see which fits best.

Note that you cannot set the pilot screw by running the bike in a shop. You really do have to run it out on a quiet hiway for at least 20 minutes, then set it while the engine is fully warmed up. I set it approximately in the shop then do a final setting at the side of the road.

It might be how i a doing it.what size pilot and main should i be using with drag pipes and high flow a/c. I cleaned carb and did rebuild kit. It is a 34mm checked it last night. Had stock jets when i got it and mixture turned almost all the way out. This is driving me crazy. Got a big ride coming up would love to have it ready to ride.. Thanks everyone for all your help

Stock jets for 1981 are main 160, slow 68. I would guess that main 170; and slow 75, maybe 80.

Got 170 main 80 slow now. When you say you tune it on road do you just pull over adjust mixture and idle. Then ride a little more till right?
