Default Primary noise

My buddy started his 75 ih the other day and it started making a grinding noise inside the primary. I have not heard the noise yet but was wanting to ask the brain trust to start to get an idea on what it could be before we tear into it. Thanks

Perhaps the primary chain adjuster shoe/mechanism is worn out, broken, whatever. Happens.

There's lots of stuff in there that can make grinding noises if it isn't right, crank sprocket nut loose, chain adjuster, clutch basket bearing, open that primary up, you'll find the source.

Elaborate more on this will help the diagnosis you get.Does it make the noise while riding also are just when in neutral, does it get louder in any specific gear?I know you said you having heard it yet but he should know so after you find out let us know.Tell him to take a wooden dowel (I don't like using screw drivers cause of chance of snatch) and place in different spots on motor and up to ear and see if he can pin point if it's at rear bottom are front of primary.

i,agree with post,#3. primary chain adjuster shoe. sometimes the nylon [wear] part of the shoe comes out,or,wear's,out. which makes the chain too, loose, and it willrub on the primary, cover.
