Just my 2 cents on the metric argument............
I was taught both at school but for all purposes since the age of 10 have dealt with the metric system for everyday life.
However,I am a traditional boat builder and all the plans I use and tables of offsets are imperiel feets and inches .I prefer it in so many ways,both looking at distances and measuring.When using engineering tools it is so much more accurate too(or maybe easier to understand?) and although i have both metric and imperiel i always measure in 1000th of an inch.
Now I live in France you can imagine what its like to deal with French engineers(although the one wizard i do use who has over 60 years on a lathe and mill can work in both),although it can be fun to give people a feet,inches tape measure when i'm asked to borrow one.

If you're simple minded, the metric system is definitely a better way to go.
