oil pressure problem
my friend has an 82 mdl ironhead sportster. lost oil pressure on guage off oil pump. oil light came on, looked in tank and oil is flowing into tank. leaking oil from under pushrod tappit guide blocks. could it have sheared the pins on pump shaft inside cam case cover. if so would it still somehow still be able to flow oil back into the tank?

There is two pins inside the pump, one on the pressure side and one on the return side, you can take the pump out of engine without having to take engine out of the frame.

78 ironhead is correct. you basically have 2,oil pumps in,one.feed,and,scavenge. [supply, and, return]. and you are fortunate with,82.you don't have to pull motor from frame to remove, oil pump.

If it's losing oil pressure at idle, you may just have the idle speed set too low. Is it losing oil pressure at 2000 rpm, then you probably have a pump problem.
But first - is you oil pressure gage bad? IH's tend to tear up gages on a regular basis. Don't start tearing things apart till you try another gage.

thank you for the help. yes i told the owner to get a harley pressure switch and new guage. next is to make sure suction side that goes under starter is not mashed. then i will drop the pump and , am almost sure that a pin is sheared. gotta love these ironheads. mine is a 77.

If the pin is sheared you need to look for WHY it sheared. Some debris from something coming apart in the engine is the usual cause. Cam shims are prime suspects.
