So,detonation is combustion before the spark? But caused by compression like in a diesel?

Cold start to idle 94 sportster XL - YouTube
If that's how it idles after fully warmed, you need to speed-up the idle. It should idle around 1000 RPM.

That sound's more around 700 rpm; much too slow. It needs the rpm's for proper engine lubrication. You might want to check the jetting. The PO may have jetted incorrectly. Oil tank temperatures will fluctuate depending on ambient air temps. Look for 180F-220F. I run much hotter so switched to synthetic to help with high temps.

actually, the idle does pick up after a little riding.
This was a cold start..in hindsight , I guess i should have included a "fully warmed' clip..

Looks like your butterflies are backwards. They looked like they were closing when you revved the engine.

+1 on the idle speed. Way low

Yes, the idle is low, especially for the air mixture
What is the idle/pilot jet? If a 42, try a 45.

Love the paint on that tank.

I would think if your oil is hot enough to melt plastic, you'd smell it for sure and if you took the cap off there may even be smoke!

My bike runs about 180 here in Southern California, but I'm right on the ocean.

What kind of funky oil routing is going on? I don't think my 1991 has those "T' and "L" fittings, seems needlessly complicated and more places to leak.

My 95 has those fittings. They have rubbed a hole in 2 of my oil lines too. They do not look melted though and I know the last few months we have had some pretty hot days here and my engine was getting really warm. I don't have a temp gauge, so I cannot guess the temp.

You can get a brass reducing tee here:
http://www.fastfittings.com/product/32352
They can be hard to find. This doesn't have the twist yours does, but it'll do. Do not get the one at Home Depot; it is meant for PEX tubing and will be too small.

But you need to get to the source of the problem too. Get a thermometer oil cap and start from there. Maybe it's just that the hoses are not the proper length or not routed well and are stressing the tee.

A well jetted motor should not see oil temp above 230 F.
Then, only for parade duty.
I occasionally saw 215 F, 40 miles from the ocean, pulling a long grade at high speed.
Mostly about 185 F, one valley in from the ocean.
