Should I not even waste my time to see if the leak is indeed gone. Should I just replace the gaskets regardless? As of now the leak seems to have disappeared. I'd never put it back together knowing its still leaking. I'll chase my tail all day (like yesterday) trying to tune over an intake leak.

I just wish I didnt have to remove the tank, ignition switch, motor mount/horn just to get enough travel to loosen the allen bolts. I might have to look for some 12 point bolts to make this easier in the future. I cant see why HD thought allen bolts where a good candidate?

You stated that you got it back together and that there is no longer any evidence of a vacuum leak. Is that correct? If so, dial in your settings and let it be.

Yea, that seems to be the case. However it might be a temperature thing or possibly the manifold isn't perfectly straight therefore when the AC is mounted it pulls on the gaskets enough to cause a leak. I did some reading and it seems to be a common issue. Some people change em every two years which seems ridiculous being its such a PITA. Idk maybe I got lucky and the leak is indeed gone, but for how long?

I have had the same issue as your talking about when adjusting the mixture screw. Idleing around 900-1000 like you said. I couldn't really hear a diferrence either. but I dropped my idle down to about 750-850 and then I would get that stumble when I was adjusting it. Then set it and put your idle back where you like it. easy. I think when you have your idle screw cranked up like you do the back plate must be open enough to idle the engine. Just be careful not to over tighten the mixture screw or you will break the end of it. I believe that there is a little needle or a point up in there. could be wrong but I think I read that somewhere.

I changed mine, the old one didn't have any tears or holes. It was discolored and had some corrosion on the top side. After changing it, my mixture adjustment finally works.

Don't know if your bike, being older, has an accelerator pump, just my .02.
+1 on this, and I don't see where you addressed the possibility yet.

I don't think the air leak could be it unless it caused you to need to advance the throttle plate too far to keep it running, which would have you running off the transfer ports (fed by that 45 pilot on the same circuit as the idle mix, but not individually adjustable). So, I guess I am saying that I do think it could be it... LOL

OK, correct the intake leak, adjust the carb, and if still can't adjust idle then check that acc pump diaphragm and replace it, Take one asperin and get back to us in the morning.
