Points on a Rubbermount?
I just picked up a 2004 on Craigslist that has been through an electrical fire, I mean everythings melted, TCM, wiring, everything. So I'm looking at a new wiring harness but would really like to clean it all up, minimal wiring, no handlebar switches, auto ign switch, no tcm/icm, etc. I think that I saw where someone here had converted an 04 to a pre 04 ignition but cant remember details.
So I'm wondering can this be done with minimal grief and expense? (I have a few older parts lying around) Can I simply modify the existing cam cover to accept points, I seem to remember that someone tried it and something with the oil passages not lining up in 04 vs pre 04. Any other issues anyone who has done this has come across? Any advice would be great.

Never mind found a thread that answered my questions. Apparently some people have strong feelings about this.

Nose cone eletronic ignitions do everything your points will do just better. It is a three wire solution if my memory serves me correctly. Points are also a solution just not optimum. Hated them on my 65 Mustang, thank god for conversion kits.

electronic ignition is the only way to go.....points won't really reduce any wiring but they will add boatloads of grief and roadside repairs.....I've never heard of anybody that converted an '04 to points, but I suppose it could be done....... but it's kind of like converting your DVD player to Beta-max
